Quick Bites PURE and FRESH: Cheese

Cheese is a wonderful thing. It's found in the different dishes that we love from pizza to everything else. Lucky me that I was able to try out PURE and FRESH Cheese. From HACIENDA MACALAUAN, they produce different dairy products. All with no preservatives. As such, we are assured of fresh and and premium products.
The cottage cheese was smooth and soft. Flavor was natural and pretty much what you would expect. The only difference was that this as with any dairy products from Macalauan, is that its made with no preservatives. Just the way I like.  Perfect with a piece of pandesal or on top of a salad.

Ricotta Cheese was at first glance grainy, but it went in my mouth smoothly. A little salty but perfect as a topping on anything.

PURE and FRESH is pretty much a home grown product that made its way to the market. Supporting locally made dairy products is just awesome. Aside from these cheese products, they also have amazing drinks from flavored milks to yoghurt. Just remember though, these products won't last long, so eat them up or drink them fast. Don't worry they're pretty much healthy!

YABU's New Japanese Styled Burgers

After munching and munching the entire day, YABU was up next. Yes I was really full already but who can say no to YABU.
Because innovation is the key. That and the creative minds behind Yabu wanted to give more choices to its loyal customers. As such, they introduced the KATSU BURGERS.

Before going to the main dishes, MOZZARELLA KATSU STICKS (260Php) were placed infront of us. Coated with golden panko, tossed in a special blend of Furikake, served with spicy aioli dip.
Without a doubt, this has got to be one of those gooey and worthy dishes in their snack section. The Cheese literally melts in your mouth. Perfect!
Moving on to the main event, the KATSU BURGERS.
First up is the CRUNCHY EBI KATSU BURGER (420Php). Filled with chunks of black tiger prawns, topped with shredded cabbage, shiso leaves, Japanese pickles, spicy aioli and caramelized onion jam in a toasted brioched bun.
I enjoyed the shrimp factor of this katsu burger. Having real bite sized shrimp inside the patty made my mouth jump in joy. You see, I love shrimps. The bread partnered well with the shrimp. Love it.
On the other end of the spectrum is the MENCHI KATSU BURGER (390Php). Menchi katsu stuffed with double cheese combo of cheddar and havarti. It also has shredded cabbage, shiso leaves. Japanese pickles, spicy aioli and caramelized onion jam.
Look at this baby. This cheesy burger perfection. One bite in and you are greeted with a lot of cheesy goodness. Partnered with the fries, you can't go wrong with this. Be thankful, they just started to serve this just this NOVEMBER 23, 2015. Last Monday! So enjoy enjoy enjoy!
To end the meal, LAVA CAKE (185Php) was served. Warm and molten laval cake with miso butterscotch served with a scoop of ice cream and caramel cookies.
Look at that chocolate center. Gooey and oozing out of the cake. The use of the miso butterscotch was plain genius. Who would have known?

YABU has done it again. Not only has YABU entered the market first with delicious katsus but it has also captured the stomachs of Katsu loving foodies in the metro. Cheers.

LOLA CAFE in TOMAS MORATO: A Beautiful Transformation

On a lovely Saturday afternoon, I was excited. I haven't had this feeling since I had my first kiss. It was because I was heading to one of my favorite places in the TOMAS MORATO area. LOLA CAFE and BAR. It was an old house turned restaurant. I remember the place pretty well. I would visit it with friends and had some pretty good dates in it. It was like going back in time.
Julia Child has the best quotes concerning food. It seems she was foodie genius and rightly so. LOLA CAFE+BAR is a resto bar near TOMAS MORATO. It is in a hidden magical place. An ancestral home converted to a romatic hangout. LOLA CAFE has been the chic kid on the block for years. I've been there a handful of times. Even once during valentines (click here for my lonely experience).
Once I entered the compound, it changed. The Al Fresco area was enclosed and is now cool. They still had a few tables outside for those wanting a smoke but with the weather, staying inside is better.
The Old cabinet and storage area is reminisce of a grandmother's home. The use of mason jars made the place somewhat romantic and perfect for a little gathering.
Food was prepared by their new chef consultant, CHEF JONVIC. The first time I met this guy was back at Gas3nomic event in Katipunan (Check out my superlative Gas3nomic experience here). He was making waves as he once was the sous chef of Chef Rob Pengson. Look where he got himself now. Incredible right? This time around, he tweaked the menu of LOLA CAFE and produced version 1.0.

Right from the get go, he introduced the starters. Different takes on old school Filipino Dishes. This is what he wanted LOLA CAFE and BAR to be. Something coherent. A menu that works together and definitely mingles with one another.
He started of with some CHIPIRONES (215Php). Fried baby squid, vegetable atchara, lola vinegar. One bite in and it wasn't your usual calamares. The baby squid made each bite different. It bought gave a crunch and the squid texture had a bite. It delicious.
Something not to miss is the BONE MARROW SISIG (275Php). Grilled Pork Jowl, Roasted Bone Marrow, Garlic Crumble, Kamias Jam.
I know that one look and it might be too much for some. Believe me when I say that one bite and it is so worth it. The sisig on top is not too oily nor was it too fatty. The chef made sure that it was lean meat. The bone marrow though was deadly. It gave the fatty texture to the sisig.

I'm not sure if it is an appetizer but the WAGYU SALPICAO (320Php) is something that could be partnered with rice. Kitayama wagyu beef, roasted garlic cloves, spanish pimenton, olive oil. The perfect salpicao. The Beef is perfectly cooked. It was sooo tender. Not over cooked. The garlic cloves, on the other hand, was borderline potatoish. It didn't taste like garlic to the point of having a dracula killer breath. Rather, it gave off that mushy texture potatoes would. Another cup of rice please.
For healthy eaters, don't fret. They have the GRILLED CEASAR SALAD and the ALUGBATI SALAD. The grilled ceasar salad was made with perfection. The Alugbati was somewhat different. They used Kesong Puti or white cheese to give it a different texture.
A different take on a familiar dish is the BACON BELLY BATCHOY (320Php). Braised Bacon Slab, Ox Tripe, Sweet Garlic Broth, Soft Boiled Egg. The incredible part here is the bacon belly. The crew at Lola makes them in house. The flavors coming from the bacon swirls into the broth of the batchoy making it rich but not to a point that it would suffocate you. The egg is perfectly cooked. Not overdone. Similar to the ones you get with ramen.
A dish that they carried over from their original menu, the SPICY TINAPA (215Php) had a remake. Basically Spaghetti, smoked fish flakes, fresh heirloom tomatoes, dried chili, and olive oil. It was a bit spicy but the taste of the tinapa was evident.

If you aren't into pastas and noodles, you could go for their SWEET PORK and BAGOONG RICE (295Php). ROasted Pork Belly, Salted Shrimp "HIBE" and BURONG MANGGA. Hibe is actually a kind of small shrimp that is dried. Burong Mangga, on the other hand, is fermented mangoes. All these mixed with rice. It's like having sweet and salty flavors playing in your mouth.

Another "meal in itself" is the 1/4 CHICKEN CONFIT and TINOLA RICE (280Php). Ginger Chicken, lemongrass rice pilaf, Green Papaya. This has got to be one of the best dishes. Everything was reminisce of TINOLA but it was something different. You could say that it was a deconstructed way of serving tinola. Without the soup, you might wonder where did the flavor go. Folks, it all went to the rice. The rice soaked up the tinolaness of the dish. This was done perfectly and everything was simple. Delicious and mouth watering. That is how I experienced this.
Adding to the healthy dishes is the GISING EXPRESS (140Php). Sigarilyas, french beans, finger chilies, homemade bagoong. Honestly, I didn't taste this. It was a bit spicy and it was veggies. So I stayed away from it. Not because I wasn't a believer of the food but because it was something I'm not inclined to eat.
Moving on, the TRUFLLED LENGUA (495Php) was welcomed surprise. Slow braised ox tongue, wild mushrooms, porcini and truffle cream. You could smell the truffle a mile away. That and it has perfectly intertwined with the cream. It was a joy to eat.
Because we live for meat, we had the ROASTED BELLY "TOCINO" (490Php) to cap the mains. 1/2 kilo slow cooked pork liempo, ssam-anise glaze, "burong" mangga.

The name says it all. The meat was cured and seasoned in house. One fork in and it was moist and the meat easily fell off the body.
But the Chef didn't want the meal to end there, so we had the BUTTERMILK FRIED CHICKEN. (390Php). Calamansi buttermilk, ginger-scallion relish, chili garlic. The chicken meat was moist and perfectly cooked. The coating wasn't as calamansi as what I would have thought it to be. The citrusy flavor was but a hint.

For dessert, we had the BAGUIO STRAWBERRIES and CREAM PAVLOVA. Sort of like meringue at the botton with cream and slices of strawberries. It wasn't as sweet as I would have imagine. It was a light way to end.
But I would go for the BANOFFEE PIE anytime.  Perfectly layered dessert. Graham at the bottom with reall slices of banana inside. The nuts were roasted and the chocolate used seems like old school. I definitely remember the flavor but it was so good that I can't seem to remember it.

LOLA CAFE and BAR has been in the business for a few years. This new menu works perfectly with one another. It not only compliments the different dishes but it also gave a fresh look on how LOLA wants to be perceived. It is slowly going out of her comfort zone and making bold steps to up the ante. LOLA CAFE serves Filipino Dishes with a simple twist. The dishes are worth a try and they don't cost an arm and a leg. Kudos.

NOVOTEL HOTEL in QUEZON CITY 's BUFFET: THE FOOD EXCHANGE

I was supposed to just drop off my mom to a little get together in Araneta but when I heard that they were going to check out a new buffet at NOVOTEL HOTEL, I quietly said yes to their invite to join them and try it out.

The new NOVOTEL HOTEL in the ARANETA area opened recently. Just a few months old, this has a business hotel feel to it. An oasis out of a concrete jungle. The lobby has Macs lined up in one corner while different seating areas at the other.

Since we weren't there to check-in but rather to bulk up, we went on over to FOOD EXCHANGE. The all day buffet option of NOVOTEL ARANETA.

Everything was spanking new. With operations being more or less just three months. Different stations lined up a long walk way.
A sexy meat cutting machine greeted us as we entered the buffet area.
Different slices of meat were lined up and were there for the taking.

There were also a lot of cheese in the chiller.
The first station that is just beside the meat and cheese would be the INDIAN section. This is the most impressive place to get your authentic INDIAN food. Aside from having a real Indian Chef manning it, there were a lot of dishes that definitely screamed Indian. From Tandoris to spices and made to order roti's and a bunch of cooked dishes.
Beside it is the Chinese Section. Here you could ask them to cook your own noodle soup.
A couple of note worth dishes on the side would be the BEEF with HORSERADISH CREAM. These are tender meat kinda like steam with cream sauce. Sooo Good.
Aside from that, they also had SMOKED PORK in BARBECUE SAUCE. Pork Belly slices with a smoky sweet taste.
To its left is the Pasta section alongside with the carving station.
During that day, it was PASTA VERDE. I had a taste and it was somewhat basil and herbs. Sort of pestoish.
Their carving station hosts to different seafood ready to be grilled and of course it wouldn't be a buffet without roast beef. That and some grilled chicken.
They also have a cooking station that is used to create thin crust pizza.
Fresh pizza being made as the need demands it.

Fresh seafood like shrimp and different kinds of clams lined up a counter.
Here, different appetizers were also presented.

Different sliced and cured fish meats
To premade salads and make your own.

A buffet won't be complete without a sushi station.
Aside from salmon and tuna sushi, they also had different rolls.

If rice isn't your thing, they have freshly baked breads on one side.
Different juice drinks are also available on the buffet spread. There were actually two dessert counters.

One catering to Filipino sweet delicacies.

and another with different cakes and small pastries like this PRALINE OPERA CAKE.

Creme brulee.
This butter pudding was awesome. It was not too sweet and was deliciously made. From what I can see here is that they made use different bread from the pantry from the night or  breakfast before. Something that made them absorb the flavors more.
Here are some of the dishes that went on the table. Grilled fish and shrimps.
All the good stuff in one plate.
A slice of this and that.
The crepe was good but the panna cotta was an epic fail though. It was too hard for comfort.
But the bread pudding was lovely and so as the mango creme dessert.

Although THE FOOD EXCHANGE recently opened, I could see the potential. This dining option in NOVOTEL MANILA HOTEL has an excellent Indian Station and the service is through and through. Everything is spanking new. Even if this is just perceived as a business hotel, the place screams service and excellence. The food is normal for a hotel buffet though. It could be better but let's just wait and see. Time would tell.

*** Avail of Food Exchange Manila's limited time offer of Php 888 nett for buffet lunch (Mon-Sat) and Php 999 nett for buffet dinner to enjoy our cheese selections. Sunday buffet brunch at Php 1,588 nett also includes free flowing sparkling wine and cocktails. *** = from their Facebook Page.
