JUST INN TAIPEI: A DIFFERENT HOTEL EXPERIENCE + OTHER TAIWAN MUST EATS

The main reason that Filipinos head on over to Taipei is because of the food. To be honest, it's that and the sights. Personally, it's the culture.
Having been to Taipei four or five times in the past 2 years, I enjoy all the different flavors and the people as well.
Having been on a red eye flight that was delayed for more than 8 hours, getting to downtown Taipei was a breeze when I arrived just before lunch time. Although the high speed train from the airport was available already, it didn't hurt that I just aimed for bus 1819 since it's comfortable and relaxed. For this trip, I went for a hotel that was fun and perfect just for me. Hello JUST INN TAIPEI. Located just south of the TAIPEI MAIN STATION, it's only a comfortable 10 minute walk from the station. To answer your question, it is normal to see travelers bring their luggages on the streets. It's a walkable city and security is pretty much fine.
With an industrial feel, JUST INN TAIPEI mostly caters to single travelers, friends, families and couples. The hotel has a number of room types. There are for singles, doubles, and even bunk beds for friends. The over all theme is somewhat industrial. There's a bit of artsy fun with each turn as the overall design leads to that. The hotel itself has a microwave, coffee and tea making facility, and a water dispenser in the lobby. You could also put some of your stuff in the small refrigerator. Just don't forget to properly label it.
The room I got was perfect for a solo traveler. The bed was comfortable and the place was clean. Although, the room was just as small as the ones you might have in Tokyo, it was comfortable and just perfect for me. It didn't hurt that their cabled tv had English Movie Channels as well.

The fact that their rooms have Japanese styled toilets, I'm pretty much sold. Although you would use a curtain to cordon off the shower area, I managed to keep the water spillage at a minimum.
Since the hotel is walking distance to TAIPEI MAIN STATION, I was able to ride the train to different must visit places while in TAIPEI. For lunch, I head on over to ADDICTION AQUATIC DEVELOPMENT (my experience here). It's more than just sushi and sashimi. There's actually a lot of cooked dishes that you could go for.
For snacks, you could head on over to the famous DA'AN district. Just get off at the DONGMEN station and head on over to the famous YONGKANG street. There, you could have a taste of the famous TIAN JIN ONION PANCAKE. It's on a corner spot on the main road so you can't miss the long line.
Even if the lines are long, I suggest you wait for it because the 10 minutes is worth it. The turnover is pretty fast and they do have an English Menu. Just point and tell the staff how many.
I went for everything on it. I realized why people enjoy this snack. It's not as oily compared to other stalls that sell the scallion pancake. The version at Tian Jin is filling and one is perfect for a quick meal.
The street is pretty busy because of all the different food stalls and milk tea shops that would lure you in. You could definitely spend a day here just walking around and checking out the different restaurants.
This time around, I asked a local what night market I should visit. I've already been to Shilin, Raohe, Ningxia and Huaxi (Longshan Temple Area). She told me to head on over to SHIDA NIGHT MARKET. A little off the beaten path, SHIDA NIGHT MARKET could be accessed by walking a few minutes north of TAIPOWER BUILDING STATION.
Since this place is near universities and schools, young ones could be seen here for their nightly treats. One thing different here is that the stalls are in buildings and that you'll come across a lot of trendy fashion shops perfect for a little bit of shopping. When I went, I wasn't able to see one single foreigner. It seems, this place is filled with locals during weekdays. A perfect sign for someone that enjoys authenticity. A popular stall here would be SHI YUN. Open since 1984, you get to create your own hot soup. Pick the different types of sticks and toppings then the guys behind the counter cook it for you.
Something sort of a mix between a xiao long bao and a siopao, HSU-JI offers these small dumplings. Pretty good stuff. Not as expensive as other stalls that you might see in Taipei. Here, people come on over bringing their own container. Might be a good idea if you plan to bring this back to Manila.
Since you only live once, I went overboard and went for some stinky tofu. This restaurant has some seats in the back but it's perfectly fine to eat while walking.
The crispy tofu was pretty good. Their version isn't as smelly as others that you might see in other night markets. The pickled vegetables gave it a contrasting flavor that cuts everything.
Just another tip. Head on over to XIMEN. If you had your fill of fried chicken and those misua, go to KFC. Try their tarts and it would be the best decision you would have ever made.
Taiwan will always have a place in my heart. If you have questions send me an email at foodinthebagblog@gmail.com ... Maybe I could help you out. Cheers!

VISITING MAOKONG: Perfect Place to Drink Tea in Taipei

Taipei would always be known for their food. One of the many reasons why tourists flock to Taiwan is because of their affordable yet delicious dishes. Believe it or not, Taiwan is more than that. Tea is another reasons why one should visit Taipei.
Say hello to MAOKONG GONDOLA. This here transports visitors to the famous MAOKONG. This used to be the biggest tea growing area for Taiwan. When the weather is cold and lovely, it's a nice place to visit. Just head on over to Taipei Zoo via the metro and a short walk would lead you to the Gondola Station. There's actually 4 stations. Beginning with the Taipei Zoo, all up to the Moakong Station which is high up the mountain.
There's actually two types of gondolas. There's the normal and the one with the glass floor. If you're feeling adventurous, I would suggest to go for the one that let's you see everything. The Crystal Cabins was launched on March 2010 and could take fewer passengers though. As such, it has a different line.
After a few minutes, you get up high and reach the station. I would suggest you make use of their washroom and other facilities before heading out.
From here, the road divides to either the left or the right. We went with the former just because there's somewhat of a food station nearby. Here, different stalls are set up and sells traditional Taiwanese dishes and street food among other things.
If you walk some more, you are greeted by different tea restaurants. One of them is this more modern one that sells tea flavored ice cream. Even if the the weather is pretty cool, go for it as the flavors are quite unique and different.
Here, we have a couple. One might think that the green one would be matcha. Although correct, it tasted somewhat different. Yummy still, it's more herbal than the usual bitterish version we get to taste with Japanese green tea.
If you walk some more, you head on over to other tea places and even a temple. After moving around, my feet led me to SHUANG HSIANG YUAN TEA HOUSE.

It had an unobstructed view of Taipei and was very relaxing. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. You get to also decide and take a pick from their menu of different tea.

From here, they get to teach you how to go about serving tea.
How it is very important to warm the cup first and to use to proper technique.
Of course, you shouldn't just go for the tea. They also offered different snacks for you to enjoy.
Aside from the flavored buns, these tofu are quite pleasant and goes well with the tea chosen. Don't worry if you don't finish the tea leaves. Once you're done, they could vacuum seal it and remove all the air, making sure it's remains fresh and perfect to use at a later time.
As the sun sets, you get to have an amazing night time view of down town Taipei.

Please take note of MAOKONG GONDOLA'S operating hours. They might differ and might also get cancelled depending on weather. Better to go back earlier than later as winds could sway the gondolas a bit.

You could reach Maokong by taking the Metro towards Taipei Zoo station. Around 350 meters, walk to the Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo Station. Usual operating hours is from 9am -9pm but could open and close at an earlier or later time depending on festivals and holidays. Best to check http://english.gondola.taipei/ for any announcements and news.

YOUR HOTEL: Taipei's Hotel with a Heart

When visiting a foreign country for fun and leisure, one of the most important questions to ask would be "Where to stay?".  One factor to always note would be the location of the hotel. Staying at a place just a few minutes away from mass public transportation would be ideal. When traveling to Taipei, it's always a plus to have your accommodations near the metro. As such, I had a wonderful time staying over at YOUR HOTEL TAIPEI.
Located just a few minutes walk from LONGSHANG TEMPLE MRT, this hotel sits right in the center of Guangzhou Street Night Market.
Another thing that's going for YOUR HOTEL would be that it's surrounded by 4 different night markets. They may not be as popular and big as SHILIN and RAOHE, but these are four different streets to give you a lot of food choices and shopping time. These are: Guangzhou, Wuzhou, Huaxi, and Xichang Night Market. Guangzhou is one of the oldest in Taipei. Huaxi is a covered walkway that is also known as Snake Alley. Xichang is more for shopping, while Wuzhou has a lot of food to offer as well. When arriving between 7pm and midnight from the airport, your cab might not be able to get through because of the night market. As with any hotel that you might visit, it's always better to have a photo of it with it's Chinese name and address.
The lobby is spacious and houses a couple of computers and a beverage area for you to use. After checking in, I realized how quirky this hotel could be. Different themes for different floors and rooms.
I was billeted at their IDELUXE room. Quite huge for just one person, this room has a high ceiling, windows, a safety deposit box, mini-refrigerator and a tea kettle for your hot drinks. Believe it or not, it has its own WIFI ROUTER for you to use. It's fast and goes around 30Mbps.
The tub is separate from the shower area and it could easily fit a couple.
The sleep factor was incredible. The bed was comfy and helped me rest after a tiresome day around Taipei.
Breakfast is served in their basement cafe. Their food choices is better compared to other same category hotels that I have stayed in. Aside from the usual vegetarian fare, they make sure that there are different dishes like noodles, pork, chicken, buns, and salad among other things.
Drinks such as: coffee, tea, juices, and even soy milk is present along with a number of bread and fruit choices.
In the same level, you could also access their laundry room. With a minimal fee, you could use both the drier and the washer. They also offer free basement parking upon request.
Other than my room, I was actually impressed with the others in their lineup.
The cuts and the floor area for each room is somewhat bigger compared to the ones that I have stayed in earlier in this year. Although you might get shocked as their wash area are more free flowing and of a different structure that what you might have been used to, you'll get the hang of it.
If you're not claustrophobic, you could get a discount if you choose a room without windows.
Families are welcome and so as friends. Some rooms will have a double and single bed for a small family, while others have single beds we well.
When asked why the hotel name, Calvin, the head of the Public Relations had only one thing to say: "Always Yours.". The owner visualizes the hotel to be service oriented and focused on the guests. That is what YOUR HOTEL wants and is all about.
YOUR HOTEL is located on Guangzhou St in Wanhua District, Taipei.

TOURING AROUND TAIPEI: THINGS TO DO WHEN VISITING FOR THE SECOND TIME.

It was my second time to visit Taipei. In just under 3 months, I have returned to this beautiful city to experience it more fully. This leads to the question "what are the other things to do here?".
One thing is for sure, the food is always a must when visiting Taiwan. Different dishes are there to greet you that could only be seen here. From noodles to pork chop to pepper buns and even roast meat, I definitely enjoyed and ate my way around the city. Plus, it's affordable. If you're okay with going at it hole in the wall style, Taiwan would be the perfect destination for you.
If you're staying near XIMEN or The Taipei Main Station, one of the few places to visit would be the underground mall. If ever you find yourself here, there are a couple of stalls to try out. The first one would be CHINA PAZZA selling the SCALLION PANCAKE.
Although not everyone in Taipei speaks English, you could some how communicate through sign language and even point to your preferred toppings. Imagine roti but with a bit more flakiness outside and chewy texture inside.  This would be a great meal to start your day touring around Taipei.  Remember that you will be eating all through out the day so it would be nice to pace yourself.
One thing that Taiwan is known for would be their TAIWANESE NOUGATS. These sweet and chewy snacks are perfect gifts for when you return back home. Thankfully, there's one near the escalator on your way to the underground train station. If you buy a few, this kind lady would even add a couple of freebies. Yes, there's free taste as well. I was able to purchase some from PINGXI on my previous trip but it was a bit more expensive and is not as home made and traditional as this one.
From TAIPEI MAIN STATION, hop on the train and head on over to the CKS MEMORIAL HALL stn. Just a couple of stops away, don't worry it's worth a visit.
Once outside, you are greeted by a huge square with different buildings. You get to see and feel a bit overwhelmed with how grandiose and amazing the place is. This is where the NATIONAL CHIANG KAI-SHEK MEMORIAL HALL is housed.
One reason to visit this place would be to witness the changing of the guards. Done every hour, from 10am to 5pm, you get to see an exhibition of skills. Don't forget to visit the mini-gallery on the side rooms. Here, there are different displayed items and memorabilia and even photos of the late great leader.
After witnessing the guard change, you get a view of the square. Yes there are around 89 steps to enter the hall but if that's a bit difficult there's elevator access on the side as well.
By this time, you could go to a restaurant and enjoy some late lunch or even do a bit of shopping. If you haven't been, you could also visit Taipei 101.
If you ever wondered about those beautiful photos which features Taipei 101, those were probably taken from ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN. Very near Taipei 101 and also known as XIANGSHAN HIKING TRAIL, this is where you get to have an amazing view of the city.
It's quite a walk going up and some parts do not have a handrail but it's all paved. When you go, I would suggest that you bring some water, insect repellent and maybe a small towel. It takes around 30 minutes to get to the view deck but I would say give yourself an hour or so just to experience everything. Go late in the afternoon and remember to check the weather.
I'm guessing that you would be hungry as much as I am so dinner is usually a must at a night market. Even if there is a vegetarian restaurant near the entrance to the Elephant mountain, night markets seems to be the way to go. Present all over the city, you get a lot of choices when you visit one. Popular choices would be Shilin and Raohe. If you haven't been there, I suggest you go. But, if you're already tired of the usual try to visit NINGXIA night market.
It's not as popular with the tourists as RAOHE and SHILIN, but NINGXIA is more a local's favorite. Located near the Shuanglian MRT and the ZHONGSHAN MRT, it's a bit of a walk to get here. Just follow the crowd and you'll find yourself right at the center. One might say it's not as big but it does deliver a few specialties with some establishments open for already 40-50 years.
Usually with the longest queue, the stall (LIU YU ZAI) that sells deep fried balls are to die for. You could choose between taro and salted egg yolk. Personally, I enjoyed the salted egg more. It's like a deep fried glutinous rice ball with fillings. Another ball like dish would come from LIN JI MOCHI. These are huge tennis ball like glutinous balls that are served with crushed peanuts or sometimes sesame seeds. It could also be served with an iced shaved dessert. Other must tries according to Tripadvisor would be:
- 'Lai' Oyster cake 賴雞蛋蚵仔煎
- Traditional to-fu pudin 古早味豆花
- Jim Kee Chicken Wings 詹記雞腳翅
- Panfried Angus Beef Cube 火焰骰子牛
Of course my personal faves are also present in this night market. The sausage on a sticky rice bun and also the scallion pancakes are readily available. If you haven't you could also go for the stinky tofu, oyster omelette, and those grilled and deep fried meats on a stick.
Another stall that had a long line would be these affordable Taiwanese Rice Balls. You could actually choose between a small one and a big one but after lining for almost an hour, my brother and I went for the latter.
It's actually rice that is filled with crushed peanuts, meat, vegetables and fried bread similar to youtiao. It's pretty good considering that it's also affordable. If memory serves me right, it's less than 60 or 80 NTD.
Writing about my visit makes me want to return again. I think I still have a couple of articles to write about that's related to Taiwan. I hope you enjoy the read.
Do you guys have any tips or tricks when visiting Taipei? I would really love to hear from you as I plan to visit it again in the near future.
