VISITING MAOKONG: Perfect Place to Drink Tea in Taipei

Taipei would always be known for their food. One of the many reasons why tourists flock to Taiwan is because of their affordable yet delicious dishes. Believe it or not, Taiwan is more than that. Tea is another reasons why one should visit Taipei.
Say hello to MAOKONG GONDOLA. This here transports visitors to the famous MAOKONG. This used to be the biggest tea growing area for Taiwan. When the weather is cold and lovely, it's a nice place to visit. Just head on over to Taipei Zoo via the metro and a short walk would lead you to the Gondola Station. There's actually 4 stations. Beginning with the Taipei Zoo, all up to the Moakong Station which is high up the mountain.
There's actually two types of gondolas. There's the normal and the one with the glass floor. If you're feeling adventurous, I would suggest to go for the one that let's you see everything. The Crystal Cabins was launched on March 2010 and could take fewer passengers though. As such, it has a different line.
After a few minutes, you get up high and reach the station. I would suggest you make use of their washroom and other facilities before heading out.
From here, the road divides to either the left or the right. We went with the former just because there's somewhat of a food station nearby. Here, different stalls are set up and sells traditional Taiwanese dishes and street food among other things.
If you walk some more, you are greeted by different tea restaurants. One of them is this more modern one that sells tea flavored ice cream. Even if the the weather is pretty cool, go for it as the flavors are quite unique and different.
Here, we have a couple. One might think that the green one would be matcha. Although correct, it tasted somewhat different. Yummy still, it's more herbal than the usual bitterish version we get to taste with Japanese green tea.
If you walk some more, you head on over to other tea places and even a temple. After moving around, my feet led me to SHUANG HSIANG YUAN TEA HOUSE.

It had an unobstructed view of Taipei and was very relaxing. The staff was very accommodating and helpful. You get to also decide and take a pick from their menu of different tea.

From here, they get to teach you how to go about serving tea.
How it is very important to warm the cup first and to use to proper technique.
Of course, you shouldn't just go for the tea. They also offered different snacks for you to enjoy.
Aside from the flavored buns, these tofu are quite pleasant and goes well with the tea chosen. Don't worry if you don't finish the tea leaves. Once you're done, they could vacuum seal it and remove all the air, making sure it's remains fresh and perfect to use at a later time.
As the sun sets, you get to have an amazing night time view of down town Taipei.

Please take note of MAOKONG GONDOLA'S operating hours. They might differ and might also get cancelled depending on weather. Better to go back earlier than later as winds could sway the gondolas a bit.

You could reach Maokong by taking the Metro towards Taipei Zoo station. Around 350 meters, walk to the Maokong Gondola Taipei Zoo Station. Usual operating hours is from 9am -9pm but could open and close at an earlier or later time depending on festivals and holidays. Best to check http://english.gondola.taipei/ for any announcements and news.

RAFFLES HOTEL in MAKATI: AFTERNOON TEA FIT FOR ROYALTY

When one thinks about royalty and luxury, one can't help but wonder about FRANCE'S MARIE ANTOINETTE. Surrounded by intrigue and opulence MARIE ANTOINETTE is synonymous to having a grand time. At RAFFLES' WRITERS BAR, you can't help but indulge. One specific way would be to partake of the AFTERNOON TEA that's patterned to the lifestyle of Marie. This is the perfect afternoon delight.
Right from the start, a plethora of choices would greet you as to what type of tea you may wish to have. Take note, you can also upgrade to having sparkling drinks too just because it's time to relax. For this instance, Raffles' very own blend was the right choice. A hint of sweetness with the right amount of relaxing notes, it came perfect for the afternoon treat.
Taking note that AFTERNOON TEA has a 3 stage effect, you are served with sweets, pastries, and seasonal tarts among other items. One level would have the short bread and the scones. Served with clotted cream and jam, one bite is a little heavy but goes extremely well with tea. These aren't the ones you get at the grocery store. They are baked fresh daily and are extremely artisan-like in nature. With attention to detail, the short breads are designed in such a way that it would remind you of France. Meticulously worked on, you tell yourself to appreciate the design and the workmanship put into each detailed snack just before munching on them.
Another layer would have the sweet touches of macaron, tarts, and even madeleines. Special mention has to go with meringue type dessert. Strawberry is placed on top and is surrounded by this crunchy texture. With the syrup inside, flavors burst each time you put it in your mouth.
Just so that to keep everything in balance, one layer contains sandwiches, quiche, and even egg based snacks. One has a foie gras while another is topped with a mixture of eggs and mayonnaise. You may opt to skip this but the foie gras is just wonderfully delicious.
MARIE ANTOINETTE may have had a wonderful time early on that resulted to a disastrous end. Fear not as this afternoon tea is made sure that you enjoy your stay all throughout.

When the word Tiffany comes into play, it exudes luxury and elegance. The WRITERS BAR in RAFFLES HOTEL MAKATI definitely knows how to execute this as they partnered with TIFFANY &CO. to create an EMPIRE STATE OF MIND.
For an afternoon delight, TEA service was introduced to the world. Sometimes people need a break from a break, hence afternoon tea was born. At TIFFANY & CO, they expect the best and that is what the WRITERS BAR does. They give you whatever you may want and will. Anticipating the need for something relaxing, they created and curated a wonderful selection of drinks, finger food and dessert.
One could start of with a selection of tea from their impressive lineup. Offering only the best, they have an impressive list of HARNEY & SONS Master Tea Blends. WRITERS BAR assures its guests of one amazing drink. If in case you would like something with a bit more kick, CHAMPAGNE service is also available.
After a few minutes of excellent tea and champagne, the whole set was delivered. For something that is being advertised as good for two, this lot is actually for three or four persons.
SCONES were served warm and freshly baked. It came with clotted cream and strawberry jam. For some finger food,  they have a fine selection of salmon with a bit of cream cheese, ham sandwich, sausage rolls and pretzels.
The PIECE DE RESISTANCE would have to be the 3 plates of pastries, cakes, and sweet delights.

All of these goodies were baked, cooked and prepared in house. Just goes to show of the incredible talent and creativity that the kitchen of RAFFLES and FAIRMONT has.
As homage to NEW YORK, the pastries and dessert served were intertwined to it. From small cronuts, to caramel apple and gift cakes from Tiffany.
One interesting fact would be the color scheme. This particular blue was tested, sent over, rejected, tested again, and sent over again to New York for it to approved by Tiffany. Talk about detail.
Excellent service and a wonderful relaxed vibe. That is how WRITERS BAR wants to present itself. It all boils down to the little details. Something that would definitely make your visit memorable. This EMPIRE STATE OF MIND AFTERNOON TEA is available for only Php 1,500 ++. You could upgrade to sparkling cocktails and champagne.
