IPPUDO: More Than Just Ramen

There comes a time when noodles and ramen would be never enough. As Filipinos, we usually like to eat different viands in each meal. It's never just going to be noodles or just deep fried dishes or plain old meat. There has to be something else to get us going. Personally, that's how my family does it and I'm guessing that's how others prefer it as well.
ENTER IPPUDO. Known as a ramen place, they have been innovating and coming up with new dishes ever so often. They like to entice foodies to come on over not just for the classics but for something else. More so, that they offer other worthwhile dishes instead of just being RAMEN.
Just like that, a dish was placed on our table and torched. It was IPPUDO'S version of an ABURI. The TORCHED SALMON ROLL is a favorite. Topped with metaiko mayo and fish roe, it had a familiar taste. It was something similar to bite sized salmon which had heavy Japanese Mayo flavorings. I would have enjoyed it more if there was more metaiko in it. Nonetheless, this is a must order.
The TEBA GYOZA is another winner. This is known as dumplings on steroids. Stuffed with meaty gyoza filling, this chicken wing dish is perfect to partner with SAPPORO BEER.
Something different and not really Japanese, the CLAM CHOWDER RAMEN was brought in. This one is actually an import from IPPUDO NEW YORK. It was redeveloped for the Filipino palette and as such served with BACON. They would suggest for you to crack the bacon into tiny bits and have it spread all over the dish.
Unique for this dish, the BLACK PEPPER NOODLES were used. This compliments the tonkotsu broth together with the bechamel sauce. The clams and the parmesan cheese made it a bit heavy but a joy to eat. Definitely, more and more options are preferred here at IPPUDO.

IPPUDO in Sm Megamall: Hot and Sexy with their new dishes.

Not thinking into what may happen, I came from an awesome lunch buffet. I told myself what the heck and still went on and on. EATING that is. I think I might have pushed too much with all the food but I sure know that I would love what IPPUDO has in store. So yes, I still went ahead and visited the SM MEGAMALL branch of IPPUDO to get a taste of their latest endeavors.

One step in and I could remember the first time I went here (click here) . Not only that, I couldn't help but compare the dishes and the flavors I had here and in one of their branches in Tokyo (click here for tokyo Ippudo Experience).
Common tables alongside couches. Personally, I prefer seating at the bar.
All the condiments that you might need for your ramen.
The first dish to come up is IPPUDO's version of a OKONOMIYAKI or a Japanese Pancake. I liked how moist and soft it was with each bite. The Pancake is actually wrapped with Chashu like meat. Almost like bacon. It's a little sweet because of the sauce on top. Be careful though as it is a bit hot as it is served on a sizzling plate.
Other than noodles, IPPUDO in MEGAMALL serves awesome rice dishes. One rice bowl that is somewhat new is the BEEF ISHIYAKI RICE (495Php).
Stewed beef with yakiniku sauce poured on top. In addtion to this, melted butter, corn, tomatoes, crisp garlic chips and french beans are served on Japanese rice. Be careful too as this is served in a hot stone pot.
After pouring and mixing the ingredients, one bite in and I was hooked. The meat was tender and the sauce was perfect. It wasn't too sweet nor was it salty. It definitely made my day. This would be my choice of meal if I wasn't going for any ramen. Speaking off, according to the staff, this has been a go to favorite for kids adolescents not really into ramen.
Alas, this is IPPUDO. It is synonymous to RAMEN so, RAMEN we should and we did.
A limited edition, the GYOKAI TONKOTSU (490Php).
A blend of tonkotsu and creamy chicken broth. It has bonito and shoyu. On the side, they have yuzukosyo pepper. This is the one on top of that soup spoon. It has a zing that cleanses the palate and makes the dish enjoyable to eat. Do not worry it isn't as hot as what you might expect. I also enjoyed that they served this with wavy noodles. Be wary of the bamboo shoots. Don't eat it as it is because it might be too salty for you. One of my mistakes as a ramen novice. Remeber: SLURP.
They also introduced the LEMON SPRITZER DRINK (140Php). Freshly squeezed lemon, sparkling water, topped with mint leaves. It's somewhat 7upy flavored soda water. I can't explain the citrusy flavor but my companions enjoyed it. For me, it was a bit sweet though.

I can see myself coming back again and again. I didn't regret going to IPPUDO even after having a buffet lunch. The Beef Rice is a joy to eat. Alongside the ramen, it would be a deadly combination. I enjoyed the okonomiyaki too as it was moist and suited for the Filipino palate. Cheers.

TUAN TUAN CHINESE BRASSERIE: Hongkong feel in SM Mega Fashion Hall

Making waves, TUAN TUAN CHINESE BRASSERIE gives the Manila Food Scene a new kick. With only a few weeks into operation, a lot are being said about the restaurant.

Passing by the restaurant during weekends and peak hours would be a big no-no as the same with its neighbor IPPUDO (click here) because of the long lines. Instead, do what I did.
I gave them a visit on a Friday afternoon. I already tried out their food as my mom brought home some to taste but I wanted to check out the place.
Around 3pm, this was the scene. Ippudo has no lines and TUAN TUAN around 40% filled with no lines as well!
After a few minutes of waiting, the kind lady at the entrance accompanied SO and I to a table. It was pretty cramped so we asked to be transferred to a more spacious place.
There were a lot of free tables out so I don't understand why they needed us to be placed there. Anyway, we were given these newspaper like menus. Even if they are just a few weeks old, I would wish they had used materials that were more resilient as they now look pretty old and dirty. Anyway, I am not here for the theatrics or ambiance but for the food and the service

One thing that I noticed when we entered was the stack of BLACK & WHITE Milk Cans.
If you frequent Hong Kong, you would notice the best places that serve coffee and milk tea use this brand and they proudly show their ware. Quality!

After giving our orders, we were quickly served with the CRISPY BARBECUED PORK SNOW BUNS (128Php)
Impressed as this was served not even 5 minutes after orders, even before our drinks. It felt as if it was toasted to perfection.
The fillings aren't that sweet compared to TIM HO WAN's version. They weren't skimping on the ingredients too. It was filled to the rim. A big plus is that they allow you to have these to go. With heating instructions on the side of the box, it turned out pretty good. Still, it is better eaten when freshly made.

Our drinks finally arrived, SO ordered the THAI ICED TEA (128Php).
Reminds me of how good it was when I visited BKK last year. Of course I had a sip.
I had the NAI CHA (108Php). Not too sweet and just had the refreshing taste. Gone in 30 seconds I believe. Sorry SO forgot to give you a taste.
Since we had the option of making our own noodles, I got a set meal with the HK STYLE COFFEE.
No additional sugar. Just used BLACK&WHITE and it was a little different but SO finished it.

I had this coffee because we chose to get a NOODLE SOUP SET(428PHP).
I had asked the kind server on her thoughts and which makes what but she was a bit apprehensive and I guess more training for her would do. Understandable with this being their soft opening and all. She couldn't answer most of my questions in terms of taste and suggestions but I just went with my gut.

You know what? It tasted great. The base soup of malay laksa was incredible. It wasn't too spicy but it gave that feeling of you wanting more. The soup wasn't too thick so it was pretty easy to slurp down with the noodles. Speaking off...
Picking the MINUTE NOODLES (instant noodles) was the right choice. For me, they were perfect for any of the soup dishes. It had the curl and twist and the amount of it was more than enough for my hungry tummy and SO's. Thank you Richard of TALES FROM THE TUMMY (click here) for the awesome post and the heads up!

From here, it was a little bit of a downhill. They totally forgot about my additional order of
GRILLED OX TONGUE (188Php)
We were already almost finished with the noodles when I had asked for it. Woops.. they forgot about it.

When it arrived, it was simple yet amazing. The texture and the flavor were brought out by the simple use of salt and a few spices. I loved it even if it costs a bit too much.

After getting the tongue, we had to kill time. We were there doing nothing. We were just waiting. For our last dish to arrive. It was like eternity. I mean, here we are thinking of getting the meal all in one go yet we had to follow up multiple times just to get our orders. I don't know if they were a little frantic but heck... the place wasn't full. Most of the patrons were actually done and leaving.

Anyway, when the HOUSE SPECIAL TRIO (388Php) was served, I had lost my appetite. Thankfully, SO was still game about her order.
This is basically 3 dishes in one. Composed of (L-R) pork chop with tomato sauce, pesto with mushrooms and creamy seafood. I liked the creamy seafood part and the pesto. The pork chop was a bit dry.

For the first time, SO didn't finish a rice meal. I guess she also lost her appetite because the food took that long.  We just had the left over to go.

I could honestly say that the food is great. Hands down. With the beverage menu as well, they could definitely build on it. Unfortunately, their service needs a little tweaking. Granted that they were just 2 weeks into operation, maybe they could help their front staff by training them more. And also, informing the patrons that the food may take awhile even if the restaurant isn't filled with customers.

Budget around 500Php per person and don't forget to bring patience because you will definitely need it.

BTW,  my mom brought some TUAN TUAN goodies for me to try a week or so back. The BEEF RIB and TENDON CURRY (488) was amazing. The beef was tender and soft and the curry sauce was definitely spot on. Also, the Honey Garlic Chicken wings (248Php) was a delight. I loved munching on them and I enjoyed the sweet taste along with the chicken skin. It is definitely better to have the snow buns in the restaurant rather than bringing them home.

IPPUDO in SM MEGAMALL: TIME TO SLURP! ZUZUTTO!

A wave of Ramen Stores have been mushrooming all around the metro for the past year or so and I guess IPPUDO coming was just a matter of time. The YABU group saw it fit to enter a partnership with IPPUDO to bring them here. I for one definitely love the RAMEN scene in the metro as more and more choices are being available for anyone in love with a good bowl of Ramen.
Remember my RAMEN NAGI aka BUTAO RAMEN experience? (CLICK HERE)
Recently opened, IPPUDO has been making waves in the social media for its awesome flavors and also because of its long lines.
The noodles are made from scratch with imported flour from overseas so you could be sure that they serve it fresh and steamy.

Before going to the main event, they have some appetizers to start things off.

DASHIMAKI TAMAGO with MENTAIKO MAYO (150Php) - These egg munchies are on the sweet side. Althought the Mayo dip is welcomed, I couldn't taste the cod roe.
Fluffy Japanese Omelette roll served with mentaiko (spicy cod roe) mayonnaise dip.

GOMA Q (140Php) - Incredible. Crunchy cucumber with spices. This is for the veggie and non-veggie lover. It's like pop-tarts. You can't stop putting it in your mouth.

Sliced Japanese cucumber with sesame dressing.

IPPUDO HAKATA-SYLE GYOZA (195Php). This has got to be my favorite with the side dishes. Flavorful and properly done. It has a bit of a crunch because of the fried wrapper. Perfect combination with your ramen of choice. GET THIS!
Original pan-fried Dumplings

CURRY CHEESE HARUMAKI (190Php) Not really for me. The name says it all, its cheese with curry flavor.
Deep Fried sping roll stuffed with curry, minced pork and cheese.

IPPUDO TEPPAN TONKOTSU SPICY RICE with NIKUMISO (290Php) - incredible. It wasn't too spicy but its basically your mixed rice on a sizzling plate. As SO would say, this could stand on its own "rice palang ulam na!!"

Now its time for the BIG SHOW.

When ordering these babies, go for the SPECIAL!!! They have everything. The Chashu and the soft boiled egg! You are eating here for the experience so get the whole she-bang!

Let's start from the mild going to the awesome!! But let me just say, the eggs were properly cooked! and the freaking pork belly were soft, tender, and melts in your mouth. and just like that I am sooo craving some ramen.

SHIROMARU MOTOAJI (375/405/470/480Php)
This is the calm before the storm. Light, garlicky and everyone would accept this. This is a safe choice for a not so spicy ramen eater.

Original tonkotsu broth served with ultra-thin noodles, pork loin, bean sprouts, kikurage, and spring onions. Classic Hakata-style ramen.

AKAMARU SHINAJI (390/420/460/490 Php) - This is for the weekend warrior. Not too spicy but it has a slow kick creeping in. Flavorful and incredible.
Tonkotsu broth with special blended miso paste and fragrant garlic oil. Thin noodles, pork belly, kikurage and spring onions.

KARAKA-MEN (390/420/460/490 Php) This is the favorite! Awesome. The Spices integrated with the broth perfectly. For the pleasure seeker and not so afraid eater, this would give you a jolt of shock and would delight your senses. If you must order just one, go for this! Be warned though its a little spicy but your tummy would get their just reward! OISHI!
Served with thin wavy noodles, pork belly, spring onions. Special spicy minced meat, miso paste and garlic oil would add a kick to the senses!!
Don't worry! If you ran out of noodles, you could order some more as long as you have broth left!

Even if they have these condiments of pepper, sesame seeds and garlic , believe me when I say, you won't be needing them.

Another lovely touch of IPPUDO is that they have utensils and table wares for the kids and kids at heart.
So CUTE!!!!

IPPUDO definitely caters to the Ramen lover. Although you might say that 3 types of ramen is limiting, you have to give them props for having a bunch of side dishes and rice meals to compliment the experience. I would have to say 600-700 Php per person would do the trick. Please be reminded that since there are long lines, be there on off-peak hours. Either really early like 10:30am or somewhere around 4:30pm. SLURP it out!!! ZUZUTTO!
