HAPAG MANILA: MORE GOOD THINGS TO COME

For a few weeks now, I have been hearing about this place in Quezon City that offered Filipino dishes elevated through proper cooking techniques. Something pretty good that is worth a try. Thankfully one Thursday night, I found myself with friends in this new restaurant.  HAPAG MANILA is a quaint fine dining restaurant that offers an 8 course tasting menu with ala carte choices as well.
Finding the place was a journey in itself. It's actually located in a small compound that used to house WHAM BURGER on the south bound of Katipunan. Just infront of Blue Ridge, parking could also be a problem since the lot can only fit a handful of vehicles. Other than that, it seems like a good date place for couples or even a small get together between foodie friends.
HAPAG MANILA tries to be something above the norm. Utilizing Filipino ingredients is one of the things that they champion. Dishes are served and explained as they are placed infront of you.  The server or one of the chefs greets everyone and advises what the dishes are and of their components. They also explain how to eat certain dishes.
An amuse bouche of a sisig-like bite-sized dish was the signal to the start of the 8 course tasting menu. The filling was quite similar to dinakdakan. An Ilocano dish that is tangy and would wake up your senses. The real first dish though, would be the SINUGLAW. Grilled pork together with market fish is served in a vinegar concoction that also have some pickled vegetables. Quite comparable to ceviche, you could say that this one is a Filipino version.
I was pleasantly surprised with the OYSTER BONETE. As soon as I placed the entire dish in my mouth, an explosion of flavors happened. A plump Aklan oyster is partnered with adobo aioli. This went really well with the buttery bonete bun. I could have easily devoured 4-5 of these babies. Then came this huge bowl filled with green leafy vegetables that is similar to herbs. As the server explained, there are LAING STONES inside. She drowns the bowl with a mango-based spritzer for added flavor.  Although honestly, I didn't taste it. The stones, on the other hand, were deep-fried and delicious.
A favorite among guests, the GINATAANG ALIMASAG is a creamy hot mess that would make you want to lick the entire bowl. Granted that you won't really do that, this dish is made of coconut squash, custard, crabmeat, and prawn head sauce. It is heavy and finger-licking good.
To prepare for the main dish, the flavor profile seemed to tone down after the alimasag. The BANANA HEART GRANOLA was well-presented. Unfortunately, I find the flavor-lacking. Texture-wise it was great but it was a bit bland. I'm on the fence on this one. Although having a vegetarian "bagoong" seemed interesting, I think they still needed to tweak this.
To clean everything up, a SORBETES was served. This calamansi sorbet forced my mouth-feel back to zero. It cleansed everything. It was strong yet wonderful.
One thing that makes HAPAG MANILA different from other places is that they offer a main dish as part of the tasting menu. You are able to pick from a number of choices. In my opinion, it was a hit or a miss. Although not part of their tasting menu, we decided to order the duck dish as it came highly recommended. I was not disappointed as it was cooked perfectly. The meat was tender and the skin spot on.
The BISTEK TAGALOG wanted to convey a Filipino dish that is commonly citrusy and salty. Even if the Rib Eye Steak was cooked perfectly, we couldn't connect it to being it's namesake. It lacked the  flavors that you could get from a Bistek Tagalog. It seems as if its rice partner made up for it. I think if it was named differently, I would probably enjoy it even more. Choosing the APAHAP MAYONESA was a gamble. It was described as a pan seared local sea bass, malunggay and calamansi mayonesa, beetroot mayonesa, squid ink rice, and dulong-okoy. Visually stunning, I can't really describe how disappointed I was. Don't get me wrong, the fish was good and the okoy was presented uniquely. Unfortunately, the squid ink rice was too sweet. I don't know if that is what they are aiming. Dessert was a choice between a coconut based ice cream and mangoes with rice cake.
HAPAG MANILA has a long way to go. BUT,  it's definitely going in the right direction. I can't stop praising their appetizers as they really went above and beyond. The mains were a hit and a miss. Probably starting high, the meal ended somewhat just okay. If I do return, I would probably just go with ala carte so that I could pick what I really want. If this is a sign of what's to come in the Filipino food dining scene, I can't wait for the future.

As they only open during dinner service, I guess it's best to make a reservation for an early time slot. Aside from having decent parking, you are able to let rush hour pass you by. Since most of the dishes have seafood, don't forget to let them know if you are allergic during your reservation. According to the chef, they can substitute some before hand if you're planning to have the eight course tasting menu.

NONO'S: UP TOWN CENTER KATIPUNAN'S ALL DAY CAFE

Tired of the usual fast food, there's this saying that nothing beats home cooked meals. This is exactly what they have at NONO'S. Dishes that are from the heart and filled with familiar memories.
A quick snack or a long lunch, NONO'S at UP TOWN CENTER KATIPUNAN could be the place for you to relax and enjoy the day away. Located on the first level of UP TOWN CENTER KATIPUNAN, Nono's is from the same people behind CBTL. As such, you are assured of quality dishes and delicious drinks.
A post shared by Food In The Bag (@foodinthebag) on

For starters, one could have the SHRIMPS with CANDIED WALNUTS. Consider this as pica-pica. You have crispy fried wantons as base and you add as much shrimps and nuts as you want. Something new to their menu, the truffle cream pasta is another must try. Once served, you get to smell the truffle making you crave for more.
Two entrees that might be great for sharing would be the PINOY STYLE BEEF STEAK and the HOMESTYLE FRIED CHICKEN. The beef steak uses USDA and is very tender. Although a bit on the sweet side, this dish might be better off named as tapa. Usually, Pinoy styled beef steak are sour in nature because of the calamansi used. This isn't true here. The Fried Chicken though, is somewhat familiar. Almost similar to a local restaurant chain's flavoring and texture profile, this works well with the gravy and the honey on the side.
Nono's is a no frills all day cafe dining. One could relax and enjoy a bite of their freshly made cakes or pick a drink from their long list of drinks.

YELLOW BOX RICE COMPANY: Quick and Easy

Quick and easy. That is how I perceive YELLOW BOX RICE COMPANY.
This place serves a delightful array of dishes that is perfect for on the go students, family and friends alike.
Located on the 2nd floor in LA VISTA PETRON along Katipunan, the YELLOW BOX RICE COMPANY is a quaint place to have your on the go meals.
Cooked as you order, the meals are prepared and placed inside a cute YELLOW BOX. You have an option to get a regular or a big box. Believe me when I say that the regular one is definitely big enough.
Breakfast lovers would enjoy their TAPA and EGG. Made from a special secret recipe, the TAPA isn't overly sweet. The flavor is just in the middle and goes extremely well with rice and egg.
If you are trying to stay away from meat, guests might want to try their DAING NA BANGUS with SALTED RICE EGG and the TINAPA with ALIGUE RICE. The top is covered with a generous serving of crispy fish skin. You must eat it quickly so as to experience that crunch.
For a bit of veggies, one could go for the BINAGOONGAN RICE and the CHICKEN AND SQUID MONGOLIAN.
The BINAGOONGAN is served with sweet shrimp paste and a bunch of pork cutlet. The Squid and Chicken MONGOLIAN has that distinct taste that you would get from the squid. This can also be changed into a all vegetable option.
The SALPICAO is just genius.
Covered with garlic and mushrooms, the beef is tender and moist. Definitely a joy to eat. Alongside the next dish.
If there was one rice box to order, it would be the SISIG. Oily juices are mixed into the flavor. From onions, pepper, meat and a little bit of fat trimmings, definitely a nice mix with rice. This has a little bit of kick into it.
YELLOW BOX RICE COMPANY is the perfect place to visit for something simple and straight to the point. Here, you could get your meal in a few minutes and have a taste of your favorites in a box.
PRO TIP: Get a regular sized sisig and salpicao. Mix them both together and it will bring you to heaven.

MAMA LOU'S at UP TOWN CENTER KATIPUNAN

Overwhelming is an understatement. At MAMA LOU'S, they want you fed right and fed good.
This restaurant started down south a few years ago and has beautifully blossomed into an award winning endeavor. Presently, they have one up north in UP TOWN CENTER KATIPUNAN.
One could start off with a couple of appetizers just to get the blood flowing. An order of poutine or mozzarella would be perfect for the kids and kids at heart. The potatoes were freshly cut in house while the cheese was definitely spot on.

The pasta selection at MAMA LOU'S is a mouth full. They have a lot to offer the dining public.
From traditional dishes like SPAGHETTI MEATBALLS and LASAGNA to something more different.

A couple of interesting pasta dishes would be the MAC and CHEESE and the VONGOLE OLIO.

The TRUFFLED MAC and CHEESE was creamy and very decadent. The VONGOLE OLIO is definitely a crowd favorite. Light and sweet. Sauteed clams with white wine makes up for the sauce and gives it a bit of flare.
When it comes to main dishes, two stood out.
The SALPICAO and the RIB EYE was excellent. They were properly cooked and were very tender. The salpicao had that right amount of garlic while the rib eye goes well with its mushroom sauce.
These two meat dishes goes perfectly well with the RISOTTO.
For pizza, the TABARNES was an easy favorite. The anchovies stood out and gave it a bit of saltiness. Delicious.
Named as simply the MAMA LOU'S SPECIAL, made use of mango, arugula, prosciutto, and balsamic cream. Sweet and sour working hand in hand.

Even if there were a couple of dishes that lacked a bit of seasoning, the extensive menu makes up for it. No wonder a lot of families and friends troop over to MAMA LOU'S. The price range is also affordable and quite reasonable.
