TALISAY: CHEF TATUNG'S MAGINHAWA COMEBACK!

And he is back. CHEF TATUNG is back with a vengeance. Wildly known as the go to guy for PYANGGANG MANUK and BRINGHE, he opted to open a new restaurant. At first he wasn't actually thinking of opening another one but now, he has TALISAY.
TALISAY sits on a renovated house along MAGINHAWA in QUEZON CITY. Here, they make their own bread and everything is done in house.
The food is simple but surprisingly good and straight to the point. Done extremely well, it's all FILIPINO FOOD with a little twist here to make your palate interested. One could start off with the bread of the day. For us it was the sourdough pandesal. Later on, you could go for some FRESH UBOD LUMPIA. With a peanut and garlic sauce, you're transported back to your province.
For the SALAD, you could get the GOAT'S CHEESE. The cheese is locally sourced. It compliments the greens extremely well. Dressing used was a herb vinaigrette. It was tangy and sweet at the same time. The flavor worked well with me.
One could never go wrong with KINILAW. According to Chef Tatung, the fish are all fresh. They never get to spend overnight in the freezer. They use every single one each day.
Initially, Chef wanted to do a small tasting dinner type restaurant. Something with a few seats, when he visited this empty place along MAGINHAWA, he knew he had to get it. A few meetings here and there, brought him to the family that owned the place. There, they became partners and opened up TALISAY.  Chef really made each dish from the heart. The dishes are all cooked step by step as they should. No shortcuts according to the chef. The KALDERETANG KAMBING is known as a best seller. This mild spicy goat stew is perfect with rice. A Cebuano Classic, the BALBACUA is tender and quite different. You rarely see Filipino restaurants in the metro serve this. It is oxtail and tendons that really works.
Another perfect dish to partner with rice would be their LENGUA IN MUSHROOM CREAM SAUCE. The ox tongue is spiked with a 3 mushroom gravy. Super delicious.
The PESCADO Y COCO is a whole fish cooked in spicy coconut cream with tomatoes and ginger. This dish reminds me of my childhood when my grandmother would make the same. As I mentioned the meat of the fish was extremely fresh.
Chef's take on DINAKDAKAN was interesting. The flavor profiles were all there. Something different though was his use of pork chop. Rather than having everything cut up, he served it whole.
Something really decadent would be the JAMON DE TALISAY. A brick-oven slow-roasted ham is cooked with pineapple glaze and vegetables. This sweet little thing makes you want to get more rice.
IN TERMS OF SPECIALS, Chef Tatung has a couple. THE PAELLA MIXTA and the PALABOK NEGRA.
The PAELLA MIXTA is his special blend of seafood and chicken. The rice were plump and the socarrat or burnt rice were really good. The PALABOK NEGRA seemed like fideua. It is the chef's take on the classic noodle dish.
These are meals into themselves. No need for viands or other things. Just try them and you will know what I mean.
To top everything off, you have to order dessert. People would usually go for their CASSAVA CHEESECAKE. It is somewhat different but their DARK CHOCOLATE CAKE with YEMA filling is to die for. No, it isn't extremely sweet. It is perfect with a cup of coffee. Just incredible honestly.
TALISAY THE GARDEN CAFE is a great addition to the bustling food scene in Maginahawa. Located on Number 44 Maginhawa Street, UP-Village, Quezon City. They open at 11am and closes at 11pm. They have available parking infront.

Disclaimer: wrote this based on my experience. was invited to try out this restaurant.

KUREJI JAPANESE RESTAURANT in AYALA VERTIS NORTH

Playful and surprising. These are my initial impression of KUREJI. It's a mix between anime and Japanese food. Once you go inside, you'll be drawn to the delicious smell and flavor in the air. Part of the VERTIS GINZA JAPAN TOWN in Vertis North, KUREJI is a unique restaurant as it specializes in sizzling ramen.
BUT first appetizers are important to note. Since one has room for more, these babies would do the trick. You could go for some Gyoza, good old partner to ramen. Crispy bottom but chewy top. To go with this, you could also try something nutty. EDAMAME isn't really a nut but rather it's a bean. Here, they cooked it with SHIO or KIMUCHI. Both has distinct flavors that would cater to your taste buds.
Chicken is also a big part of any meal. At KUREJI, they have a lot of deep fried variants to choose from. You could go for the traditional Chicken Karaage.
If you want something else that would make your dinner unique, the wings would be the best way to go. They have the SOY GARLIC YUZU, SRIRACHA, and SALT AND VINEGAR. For something hot, the sriracha would be your pick. The Salt and Vinegar though was my personal favorite. It gave a tingling sensation to my tastebuds.
Now, the specialty of KUREJI is in their SIZZLING RAMEN. It's a new twist given to our old school favorite. It combines both ramen and sizzling plate. Once served, you add some soup on it just to make everything complete.
There's a lot to choose from. You could go shio, shoyu, garlic miso, and even tomato seafood.
The Tomato Seafood was a revelation. It combined everything that you would want from seafood and ramen.
Thankfully, you have the choice to have them in rice form. To be specific, they have the pork chashu, tomato seafood, and the GYUDON. Now, if you feel the tomato seafood and found it better with rice, then good for you! We have the same preference. For others though, they might enjoy the gyudon more. Thinly cut beef slices that works with their secret sauce and egg and rice. Perfect!
KUREJI is located on the 4th Floor of VERTIS NORTH AYALA MALL in Quezon City. It's on the same floor as the cinemas and is part of Ginza Japan Town.

FAT FOOK KITCHEN in ROBINSON GALLERIA : TAIWANESE FOOD IN MANILA

One reason that made me visit Taiwan was definitely its food. Actually, I've been to Taiwan more than 3x just because of its food. As a person that likes to eat, Taipei is one of the most must visit places for Filipinos. The culture and history is present. The people are kind and helpful. Infrastructure is taken cared of and of course the food is delicious and not that expensive.
Of course, I can't visit Taiwan all the time. I'm thankful that FAT FOOK KITCHEN opened to the public. This restaurant serves authentic Taiwanese dishes that reminds me of my trips to this wonderful country. FAT FOOK KITCHEN recently opened a branch in ROBINSON GALLERIA. Part of the new wing that houses different innovative restaurants, FAT FOOK definitely draws in the crowd.
When you visit, the first thing that you should go for would be the beef noodles. The taste and flavor takes me back to the first meal I had the first time I was in Taipei. Hungry, I readily devoured that bowl. This reminds me of that.
If you're not up for something with soup, you could go for one of their dry noodle variants.
One dish that is also a welcome treat from Taiwan would be their XLB. Xiao Long Baos are dumplings with soup in them. The ones from FAT FOOK took it a notch higher by offering SALTED EGG flavor.
When  you've been to Taipei, one of the must visit places would be their night markets. These are streets that are lined up by different stalls that sells food and even gadgets and offer parlor games as well. The Taiwanese sausages are a staple in these night markets. They give a bit of a sweet touch to the savory aspect.
To make any meal complete, guests are invited to try out their spareribs and even shrimps.
The spareribs were cooked properly and the shrimps were drowned with salted egg flavoring to make it one heck of a dish.
A new dish from FAT FOOK would be their SPICY BEEF BRAISED SOUP.
Interesting how it comes with an instruction sheet on how to properly try it out. This spicy beef is partnered with a clear broth noodle soup and rice. The beef is tender and delicious but beware, it is spicy! If you're into that, this is the dish for you.
One thing new from FAT FOOK KITCHEN ROBINSON GALLERIA is that they have a take out counter. Here, you're able to go for snacks that you could bring while you go around the mall. Plus, they also serve some milk tea to booth.

2 LAZCANO IN QUEZON CITY: ONE HECK OF A FOOD TRIP PLACE

Sweet and savory. Two flavor combination that would seemingly work. Not every time of course, but it's definitely something that Filipinos love. At 2 Lazcano Place, my friends and I were treated to everything but the kitchen sink. You see, this place is a collection of different restaurants all in one. It's not another food park mind you, but a compound with different standing restaurants with their own kitchen, seats, and the works.
Located at the intersection of Sct. Lazcano, Sct Magbanua, and Mother Ignacia, 2 Lazcano Place houses a number of different restaurants. Parking might be a little bit of an issue but once you get a spot, you'll surely be rewarded with all the food, drinks, and sweets you might want to have.
For that lunch, we all started with KUSINA JUAN REPUBLIKA. This restaurant is the Filipino joint in the compound. It has an extensive menu and the pricing is quite reasonable.
A post shared by Food In The Bag (@foodinthebag) on

Aside from the sisig, they actually surprised me with the PINAKBET RICE with SEAFOOD. You might be surprised but it's not all vegetables. Once you pass that, you get a taste of buttery and rich rice.
IF you can't decide what to get, you may want to go for the platter. A mix of deep fried squid, liempo, and even ensaladang eggplant.
You could partner this with their deep fried hito with their homemade buro or fermented rice.
To be fair, the sizzling options are quite good as well.
The winning dish for that lunch though would be THE CRISPY PATA. This baby is one massive hit. Crispy Skin and flavorful meat inside. Dip it in the sauce and get some rice, and you're all good.
If you're up for something light and a bit boozy, the LITTLE WINEHAUS got you covered.

They have finger foods and sausages plus meat to entice you. You could have them together with a glass of wine or their sangrias. There is something about the combination of salty meat and the sweet touch of liquor.
Japanese food lovers would enjoy BENTO and CO. This petite shop has a lot of punch. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of their dishes. They were all executed well.
Of course, they got to have bentos in their menu. These meals are quite delicious and have generous servings. The ones with the "steak" are quite enjoyable too.
If that's not enough for you, their EBI TEMPURA might work together with their rice bowls and yes, they also offer sashimi and sushi.
To be honest, I was quite surprised that there are two restaurants with almost similar concept.
The first one is on the second floor. Named as BREWOLOGY, once you enter you are greeted with the aroma of the coffee. They have a number of pastries and coffee.
You have to try their WAFFOGATO. It's not as sweet as you would imagine and it's pretty good twist to the usual waffle. Their coffee is really good and is best partnered with their baked dishes.
URBANIDAD CAFE on the other hand, focuses more on cakes. Aside from the drinks, their cakes are pretty good.
At first glance, you might say that it's another food park. BUT, it isn't. 2 LAZCANO PLACE is a collection of different restaurants that could provide whatever you may crave for. Don't forget, you could actually sit in any place and you could cross order from whichever resto you may like. So, it's basically one place that could really tickle whatever you fancy.
