PEPPER LUNCH: LAMB STEAK starting November 1, 2014

Rice with meat (and a little veggie) is what a complete meal is. Simply put, it is the the best thing a foodie could ever want. Place all of them on a hot sizzling plate and it gets cooked to your liking.  PEPPER LUNCH makes sure that you get this plus quality while not having to pay an arm and a leg.
On a lazy Thursday lunch, a few friends and I got invited to try out the new stuff from PEPPER LUNCH. It was actually my first time visiting the place. Although I have seen the restaurant popped up into different places, I have never tried it out till then. Given that it was a work day, I noticed that a lot of patrons are visiting the restaurant even if its in the basement level of the Shangri-la mall wing.

Happy Me, that I got surprised. We were all getting try the LAMB!
Lamb is one of those meat that I enjoy. Ever since I tried it out when I was in Grade 3, I had an affinity towards it and always looked for it in a buffet spread.

First up was the LAMB PEPPER RICE (249Php)

My type of meal. Generous serving of lamb placed around the rice.
You could really taste that specific flavor to lamb. If you feel it needs a bit more seasoning though, you could try adding up the special sauces PEPPER LUNCH has for you.
STEAK SAUCE (salty soy like sauce) and the HONEY BROWN SAUCE (sweeter version).

If you seem a little more adventurous you could try the ITALIAN LAMB STEAK (299Php)
The LAMB meat was marinated with herbs and oil. Needless to say, I stayed away from the "white pasta like veggie" unknown to me and enjoyed the corn to go with it. This was more flavorful for me and I enjoyed this dish more.

The LAMB STEAK PROMO would start on NOVEMBER 1 and would last until the end of the year. It would only be available in PEPPER LUNCH restaurants and not the express versions. Budget around 300-400 Php per person and bring a friend as this meal is enjoyed with someone you love.

SENOR POLLO: QUICK Late Lunch in Tomas Morato

Roasted Chicken has that appeal to me ever since I was a kid. It all started with my ever so favorite restaurant POLLO LOCO. Yes, that place that serves chicken with a make your own wrap. Thankfully, I no longer need to go to SM MEGAMALL, just to get a piece of my chicken fix. Since SENOR POLLO opened, I can now get it easier and quicker.

Fine, there are no wraps at SENOR POLLO but it also serves delicious soft shell tacos like its sister resto, EL CHUPACABRA and other interesting side dishes..

Located in a compound full of restaurants, SENOR POLLO is a small place that wants you to bring a big appetite. Even if their menu is simple and straight forward, the food is as I said interesting and the place homey with a Latin feel.

The first floor is open air, as this is where they grill and make your food. You order your stuff here and pay for it before going up to the second floor.
Thankfully, it is air conditioned but it can only cater to around 40 people max.
Before going for the food, take a moment and visit the washroom. You will enjoy the art work on the wall.
After a few minutes of waiting, SO and I got our food.
An order of a WHOLE ROASTED CHICKEN with 3 side dishes (560Php).
Before we go on any further, you might say that the chicken is normal or what not but it is the CHIMICHURRI SAUCE (green herb stuff) that makes it exciting to eat.
Usually, it is to partnered with grilled meats and this is no exception.
The meat of the chicken was moist and I loved eating every piece of it along with the sauce.

We had to get the side dishes we would love to partner with the chicken aka CARBS!
MAC and CHEESE -  A little bland but does the trick.
PATATAS BRAVAS- Deep fried potatoes with sauce.
It was the perfect combination with the sauce and the chicken. Except that the SO loves rice more so she would disagree with me and go for the SPICY RICE.
She had a couple of cups of this and enjoyed it tremendously. It had a little kick but it wasn't too spicy. I, on the other hand, let her be.

Since I knew I couldn't go to EL CHUPACABRA anytime soon (yep it's in Makati), I tried out their version of a STREET TACO (100Php) .

I chose the CARNE ASADO. It had 2 pieces of the soft shell taco and some sliced beef covered with . The tacos had a corn taste and it went well with the tender and soft meat. I loved it. A little pricey for 100Php but for quality, I will order it again.

Chicken and side dishes. Enough said. The chicken is moist but there maybe other places that offer more affordable chicken. The difference is that this place has side dishes that makes the eating enjoyable. Budget around 800-1000 Php for a party of 3. Service is all right and attentive but it could get a little messy during peak hour. Better go in the afternoon.
Suggest not to go for the Fried Chicken. It is somewhat leaning towards Jolibee. Yeah, almost the same, but I prefer Jolibee more.

Tried the SWEET POTATO MASH and the LATIN COLESLAW at home. The mash was bland while the LATIN COLESLAW was flavorful and goes well with the chicken. I would exchange the mac&cheese for it anytime.

SO's Birthday in MANILA HOTEL's CAFE ILANG ILANG

As I said before, Manila Hotel's CAFE ILANG ILANG has been my go to place for a luxurious buffet.  CAFE ILANG ILANG, for me has exceptional value and it is not too crowded. Quality over quantity I always say.

Everything was perfectly planned. It was her birthday. Buy her the blanket and the pillow she wanted. Reserve for a romantic dinner. Walk under the stars. Have the flowers be delivered to her place on her birthday.  Except that it all went kaput. Damn the last minute change of plan and let's meet later than what was originally planned. Damn the new credit card. It didn't want to cooperate with me and I had to have it replaced. Damn the troubles of driving through traffic because she wanted to be picked up. Damn it all. Effort in vain. My plan all went down the drain. Good thing I got a back up plan of a back up plan of a back up plan. Yeah, Plan C.

Thankfully, PLAN C was somewhat intact and doable. Generally so but not quite complete. It couldn't be. Circumstances led to another and it was pretty off. I tried to give her everything she wants but still not enough. Nothing is enough for her, I always think and she consistently reminds me of it. More so her wants and demands. Argh! Murphy's Law! Oh well, the things you do for love.

Entering Manila Hotel, you are greeted with a huge lobby. Since it was halloween season, a lot of creepy decorations were in place.
I wouldn't mind eating with these bones as long as the food was delish.
Leading to the Cafe, this was outside. It was making sounds and the tv was showing a creepy photo of a old family with a dark background.
Remembering that she wanted an unlimited quantity of food but keeping it fancy, I figured no ordinary buffet would do. She didn't want those expensive places that serve excellent yet miniscule dishes so hello Cafe ILANG ILANG.

Saturday night was Hawaiian Night. I toured her around since it was her first time visiting Manila Hotel.
Of course the mandatory make your own pasta place.
Along with excellent cheese selection.

They also have a bread place that has all the carbs you would want.
I would suggest you skip this so that you won't get full quickly. Remember, you are here for the flavors.
Right beside it was the salad
and appetizers.
I tried to be healthy with this plate.
They had an excellent Japanese section with fresh sushi and sashimi and all the tempuras you could want.
I just had a bowl of soba though for my carbs.

Saw their Chinese stuff, and got a few wraps of Pecking Duck.
I did skip their Mediterranean and Korean stuff as I had my eyes on the big guys.
 PRIME RIB.
Perfectly cooked. It was a little bloody in the middle so I had it grilled for a quick minute and it was delicious, tender and juicy.

Speaking off, they had this Churrasco Station.
What is a buffet without the grilling station?
Along with different sausages and side dishes, it serves leg of lamb, baby back ribs and Brazilian Ribs.
Even if they had lechon or roasted pig, I still went for my favorites.

the beef and the lamb. Yummy!
To end the meal, I had a try at their seafood station.
Had these babies grilled with Edam Cheese and it was wonderful.

Of course, I lied and didn't end it yet. I had a plate from the dessert station.

Sugar free mind you.
 With some sugarfull stuff!
 and back to this.
I liked how you could have tea or coffee to go with your meal. You get to pick your type of coffee too. From lattes to shots to cappuccino to espresso.

and with that, I reminisced about MY MANILA HOTEL TOUR (click here) and just had to get this shot with her.
kind of familiar right?
The service was phenomenal. The wait staff was attentive and everything we asked for they delivered. The chefs of the different stations were easy to talk to. It didn't hurt asking them for something out of the spread or maybe their favorites. A little expensive at around 3,100 Php nett per person on a Saturyday Night but having a prestige card would give you a 50% off.

All is well that ends well I would hope. Thank you very much for all those that greeted CHEN for her birthday. Maraming salamat po

IL PONTICELLO IS BACK! : New and Improved!

I was scared. I didn't have Waze nor did I have Google Maps. I cashed out my cellphone's plan and opted to let go of my wireless internet connection. I was traveling in an unknown environment so I was pretty much screwed. Although lately, I have been to Makati. A couple times more compared to the sum total of visits for the past 3 years, which mind you is zero! Worst, I was not familiar with this side of town. After a few right and left turns and double backs, the SO and I got to the area.
I didn't know where to park. So even on a Sunday, I got on over to a deserted pay parking lot thinking that the street parking is a no-no on a Sunday. Later did I find out, that when in Makati, Sundays are free days and you could park without the need for those pesky 2-3hour limit and pay parking stubs. Ouchie!

Grouchy as it made me, one look into the place and I forgot all my troubles.
SEXY is definitely back. A landmark in Makati, IL PONTICELLO is making a come back.
Now under a new management and kitchen staff, you could expect great things with this revived rockstar. I have heard of war stories and old school flames from this place and now it is given a second life.
Right off the bat, we were served these antipasti.
The MOZZARELLA IN CAROZZA (220Php) was heavy already because these big bites were pan fried in butter. You could definitely taste the gooey and cheesy mozzarella but you must not stuff yourself with this because you know deep inside more is to come.
Another cheese starter is the PORTOBELLO ALLA GRIGLIA (490Php). A favorite on the table, it had grilled portoblello, mozzarella de bufala, smoked ricotta, Poached Cherry Tomatoes and Evoo.
Initially, I mistook the mushrooms for some kind of other veggie that is foreign to my eyes. One bite though and I knew the familiar shrooms and it goes well with the cheese!
Not to mention pairing these dishes with white wine.
Moving to pasta, we first had the GNOCCHI AMATRICIANA (390Php). I wasn't too keen on the gnocchi as it was a bit too mushy for me.
I am not sure if it the pasta was overcooked but I have only tried gnocchi once before at MADISON'S and it was a different experience for me. One spoonful and I skipped this saving more room for my tummy.

The CREMA DI TARTUFO (450Php)
was better. It was special because one whiff and you could smell the Truffle! It is as if you could taste it already.
This time around the pasta was cooked perfectly and one bite and I love it!

The best pasta for me is their LASAGNA CARBONARA (420Php).
Break the egg yolk to make it creamier than the normal creamy level.
Making it rich and deadly. Bad for those people with bad cholesterol but worth a bite! In my case, I couldn't stop with one or two or three. I think I had a few. A MUST EAT in PONTI!

With pasta, there must be Pizza.

Truffle and mushroom lovers would rejoice with TARTUFO (520 Php). It was an overload of mushroom. Oddly enough, it didn't taste too strong for me.

For the safe pizza eaters, the VALDOSTANA (520 Php )is your bet. Parma Ham with gorgonzola cream, mozzarella and baby arugula. The Chef thought about the not so veggie lovers as the greens were placed just in the middle.
The ROTOLO (480Php) would be my pick for the innovative and eater friendly pizza. It is rolled up for you and you just have to pop it in. Easy as that!
The outside crust has a little crunch feel while the inside is moist and creamy. Having the pesto on the side made the dish complete.

My tummy was growling to the tune of abuse that we figured out that we haven't even started on the mains. Damn! No wonder we were told to come with an appetite.
Starting off...
THE CHILEAN SEA BASS in BOTTIGLIA (1,400Php). With the price alone, I was floored. I was never a fish eater so I wouldn't really know what good fish is. But one sip of the prawn broth, I knew this was a winner.
Pan Roasted Chilean Seabass, Prawn Broth, Mussels, Clams, Napoletana Piccante Sausage, Finished and served in a Mason Jar.
Honestly speaking , the price of this dish would definitely make me think twice about ordering it.
I was thankful that we were served with small tasting size plates but still, it was a bit too much for me. One fork and I am good.

Something not yet on the menu is the PRESTO. It is a word play on the dish. Grilled prawns, Cherry Tomatoes, Fried basil, Garlic Confit and Trofie Pesto.

As simple as it might have been, I found myself taking spoonfool of the pesto side dish.

Now for the big boys.

The FLAT IRON STEAK (590Php) is the MAN!
Cooked to Medium rare- Medium, you could still see the bloody sauce on the plate. I love how tender it is even if it isn't a wagyu. SO was elbowing me to stop eating this.

Speaking of SO, she mistook the next dish as bread. HAHAHAHA!

This slow roasted pork belly needs no introduction. Crunchy outer skin while moist meat inside.
Seasoned with the right herbs, the SIGNATURE PORCHETTA ALLA ROMANA (390Php/1200 Php whole) is a sight to see. Served with Pommery Mustard Sauce, the dish needs to have a special space all to itself in your tummy.

Because it would be a travesty, no great meal must end without dessert.

I enjoyed the TIRAMISU (290 Php). Soft and fluffy. Served with nutella plus vodka spiked drink on the side that would make you ask for one more.
The wiggly bunch of the dessert is the CHEESECAKE PANNA COTTA (290Php). Vanilla flavored panna cota with cheesecake cubes on the side.
Its brother from another mother would be the DARK CHOCOLATE PANNA COTTA with SALTED CARAMEL. Another new dish to be added, this reminded me of chocolate pudding. The dark chocolate wasn't as bitter as what I wanted it to be. Still, delicious.
CANNOLI (290Php). Famous dessert from The Godfather... "Leave the gun. Take the Cannoli ".
The creamy inside compliments the crispy cinnamon pastry shell. The peanuts gave it an additional crunch.
For the chocolate lover, the BUDINO AL CIOCCOLATO (390Php) is the only way to go. Simply described as a chocolate lava pot, it is accompanied by more chocolate liquid and light cream.
and if you are into something not to sweet, the CARMELLO DI SEMOLINA (290Php) helps everything go down.  Similar to bread pudding, its caramelized exterior is a joy to munch on.

After the 4 hour brunch-lunch and early dinner event, one word to describe my IL PONTICELLO experience is DELIZIOSO. I believe I must have had at least 3 food comas all throughout the meal that I needed to stand up and rub my belly just to get everything in the right position. Granted that the prices of the dishes are a little on the high side, you would be surprised with the quality and quantity it offers in return. Given that the location is in the heart of Makati, IL PONTICELLO is a gem waiting to be released. Currently, they are on their soft opening and had their official launch just last Friday. I expect good things will come to those that visit this restaurant. The worst being a food coma. Believe me, I had three.
