BLUE MARINA BORACAY EXPERIENCE: An Extension of Coast Hospitality

I was quite interested to see how Boracay evolved after it was closed for more than a year. I've been there quite a number of times but I usually stay in the northern part of the island. The first time I was there, we still had time shares in Fairways and Bluewater. The place was really nice and Cocomangas was the go to bar. Years later, I went there to checkout Shangri-la a few times. Also, I was invited to see how Hennan Crystal Sands was doing just a few months prior to Boracay's closure.
This time around, I was quite interested with the new policies and restored look that Boracay has. I went ahead and waited for a travel expo and got a relatively affordable stay at BLUE MARINA in BORACAY. Stays at Blue Marina included transfers.
After arriving in the CATICLAN Airport, the transfer service of BLUE MARINA was waiting for me. Thankfully, I was the only one that they were picking up. Compared to other big name hotels, most of their vans are packed. From there, they assisted and brought me to the jump off point. Reminisce of my old experience with Fairways, a number of hotels were actually using their welcome station for their guests. There, you could use the toilet and freshen up a bit. They would then bring your stuff to the waiting speedboat. This would ferry you to Boracay's Jetty port. From there, a van would transfer you directly to the BLUE MARINA.
You might wonder what's the difference between the COAST and BLUE MARINA. BLUE MARINA is situated between the border of station 2 and 3. It's quite near Station X and is located a few minutes walk towards the beach. That being said, it is quieter and more tame compared to having your room right smack in the middle of the beach front. Furthermore, as a guest of BLUE MARINA, you are able to use all the facilities of the COAST. I'm getting ahead of myself, so I'll expound on them a bit later.
After arriving, you will see how beautifully laid out the garden area of BLUE MARINA. You could just relax and enjoy your time there. If it's a bit humid, you could stay inside and just chill in their lobby. There are a number of chairs and tables inside as well where you could eat your snacks.
Even if I was staying alone, I was given a room that could accommodate 3 people. I had a tv, telephone, alfresco area, a toilet, and a desk with chair. There's also a small refrigerator and mini-bar for your needs. The alfresco area is small but this is where you could hang your wet clothes.
The toilet area is simple but all your needs are provided for. Water pressure was good and there's a bidet. Once you've settled down, the staff would actually inform you of the different perks that come with being a guest at BLUE MARINA.
Since BLUE MARINA is operated by the same people behind the COAST, you could use the COAST's facilities and perks. One of them would be their beautiful pool. There's two of them that you could lounge in.  PROTIP: head here during the afternoons. It's a good 5-10 minute walk to and from but it isn't that far.

After lunch, they offer unlimited popcorn and sorbet up until 4 or 5pm. If you don't want to stay in the pool area, they have a game room that has table tennis and other things. There's also unlimited cold water there so you can keep yourself hydrated.

Another thing that makes the COAST and BLUE MARINA stand out would be their hospitality. You don't need to ask any staff around. If they see you're going to the pool and use a lounge chair, they fix it up for you. They even fold your clothes and offer you snacks or cold water. The same goes with their beach front. If they see you, they offer to put a beach bed and have a waiting glass of ice cold water for you as well. PROTIP: After lounging at the pool, at around 520pm, head on over to the beach front of the COAST. There, the staff would prepare a beach bed and assist you with your needs.
The reality is that BORACAY is filled with tourist. Frankly, there's roughly 2/6 Chinese, 2/6 Koreans, 1/6 Filipinos, 1/6 westerners. Sunsets or late afternoons would be the best time to head on out to the beach. The cool breeze would definitely make you forget about your worries.
If you're going around Boracay, it's quite easy to walk. Granted it might take you 15 minutes to get there, sometimes it's better to ride a tricycle. One of the things that changed in Boracay would be the traffic and the road network quality. The roads became a little bigger and they now have loading and unloading areas. One thing to note would be that some of the tricycles are now electronic. Another unfortunate thing I learned though was that the drop off point for hotel shuttles in D'mall or station two was moved to a farther site. Also, the roads aren't quite fixed yet when it comes to station one and other parts of the island.

Going back, BLUE MARINA and the COAST both offer massage service. Unfortunately, they are a bit pricey compared to the ones that have their own spot in D'mall or station 2. I would suggest checking those out if you really need a massage.
Breakfast at BLUE MARINA is a little different compared to THE COAST. The Coast offers a buffet style breakfast. In BLUE MARINA, the staff asks you to order the night or afternoon before. Here, you get to pick breakfast sets that are actually available ala carte if you visit Cha Cha's. Cha Cha's is The Coast's in house restaurant.
If you're a Filipino food lover, their sausages are pretty good. If you had a long night, the hungover breakfast special would work. PROTIP: you can ask for rice!
They also have vegetarian menu for those wanting something healthy.
You don't need to worry though as they have a mini-buffet line in BLUE MARINA. There's a number of cakes, bread, jam, cereals, soup, coffee, tea, juices to choose from. If you have the chance, try the UBE CHAMPORADO. It's really good. PROTIP: you can set what time your food would arrive. You can also ask them to serve it in your room. Best bet to have it served in the lobby just because they could attract ants big time!
Hospitality wise, BLUE MARINA and the COAST is worth every penny. The fact that I was able to book my stay at roughly 60 USD a night (good for two), I'd say I was really lucky. That included transfers from Caticlan Airport and even Breakfast for two.

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT BROTZEIT SHANGRI-LA MALL

If there was one place that I would like to have some beer loving, it would be BROTZEIT. Known as the place to visit for your European Soccer needs, this German bar has a ton of drinks available. Just this weekend, my friends and I in the Kain Tulog Gang had an intimate gathering. A Christmas Party of sorts with all the old fellas over. Been friends with most of them roughly 7 years makes this a must go to event.
BROTZEIT SHANGRI-LA is located in the alfresco area of Shangri-la mall in Mandaluyong. Parking could be a problem but valet is always available. I did arrive late because of the Christmas Rush but the spread was just amazing. I started with the GRAZING BOARD. Ham, different types of cheese, jam and even pretzel ensaymada. This is a must for snacking and drinking.
Salad wise, I was impressed and surprised. I didn't know that Brotzeit offers these healthy treats. One could be a seafood version with seared tuna, shrimps, and smoked salmon. The other is more a more party take on salad. The FESTIVE WINTER SALAD has a mix of lettuse, beetroot, brussel sprouts and caramelized carrots. Cranberries and nuts were added to the fray as well.
The spread was filled with different types of SCHNITZEL. Along with a number of side dishes like mashed potato and sauerkraut, I was pretty happy.
Something for the season, one of them was covered with tomato sauce and cheese. For me though, the BREAKFAST SCHNITZEL was the star. Topped with deep fried egg, bacon and other goodies are sandwiched in between two schnitzel.
Of course a visit to BROTZEIT will never be complete without the PORK KNUCKLE. Somewhat similar to our Crispy Pata, their version employs more meat and skin. The outer layer is crunchy and the inner moist!
Before I forget, I did enjoy the PRETZEL ENSAYMADA. These cuties weren't as sweet as the traditional version but were just perfect to partner with everything.
One should not leave BROTZEIT without the trying the drinks. Aside from the different high-end draft beer they offer, they also have a number of perfect for the holiday treats. One could go for WINTERBIER which is a specialty that is brewed for the cold winter months. Another would be the MULLED WINE which is a GERMAN Christmas Tradition. It's wines filled with aromas of cinnamon and orange. If you're not into alcoholic drinks, you should try their spiced Christmas Hot Chocolate.

WHITE WATER RAFTING IN DAVAO: TRYING THE DAVAO WILD WATER ADVENTURE

When I moved to the United States, I started to appreciate the great outdoors more. Hiking, snowboarding, going on road trips, are just some of the examples that I kept on doing while I was there. When I visited Davao a few weeks ago, I realized that it's a nice place to check out because of the outdoor activities it offers. One of them would be WHITE WATER RAFTING in the DAVAO RIVER.
It was on my bucket list. Doing something extreme with my mom. Yes, I was accompanied by my mom and aunt to do white water rafting. I thought they wouldn't do it, but they did. So after making reservations with DAVAO WILDWATER ADVENTURE, I found myself inside DAVAO CROCODILE PARK. This is where the meet up point for this extreme experience.
The assembly time was at 8am. Since we were a little bit early, I was able to check out the park. There were tons of crocodiles around. Some were just waiting with their food in their mouths. Scary but I get it. It's fun to play with food sometimes. Anyway after heading to the office, we were greeted by the staff.
We were given waivers to sign and was asked to watch a short film. They also discussed a bit about safety and everything else. Remember, you will get wet so be prepared and bring a change of clothes, toiletries, towel, and a bag. They will ask that you put your valuables like cellphone, cameras, and things that might get wet into their lockers. If you are wearing glasses, they suggest that you leave them. They would lend you some eyeglass straps if you really need them.
Afterwards, they will be giving you some equipment to bring. Safety is important so they have vests and helmets for you. I would suggest that you wear rashguards and shorts together with aqua shoes.
The adventure itself is for a group of 5 or 6. They actually have a promotion of 5+1 at 1,500Php per person. That's not bad considering that it includes transportation to and from the river, the gears, the guides, a souvenir shirt, documentation like photos and videos. One thing I do not like though is that they give you a couple of cds for the photos and videos. Maybe, they should shift to usb instead. It's faster in my opinion.
This was us before going to the river. The ride is a little bumpy because the roads were being fixed. After an hour or so, you'll arrive in Tamugan. You enter a private area and from there walk down to the staging part. It may be a little slippery so be careful. They also teach you how to put on your vest and helmet properly.
After entering the raft and paddling for a bit, they ask that you fall into the water. Here, they teach you how to position yourself when you fall of the boat. According to them, it's important to lie down with your feet going first down river. This would ensure that you will be able to see where you will be heading and that your feet won't drag you down.
Aside from the guide on the raft, there are two other staff with us. One is a photographer/videographer and another would be a follow person just in case anyone gets thrown into the water.
After an hour or so, we stopped for lunch. They packed meals for us. Do not throw away your trash. Remember to keep it and the staff will actually collect it after you eat.
After lunch, we experienced a little shower. It was actually a welcome reprieve from the heat. Although, you get to see a lot of things while going down river.
I can't really tell you the entire story because you need to experience it for yourself. Let me just say that this part right here had me bounce off my seat. Thankfully, I still landed in the boat. During our rafting, no one was thrown out into the river. It was a great experience that I will never forget.
We got back to the park at around 4:30pm. There, we had a shower and were given our souvenirs. Aside from rafting, we also got free passes to other activities located in the area (Tribu K Mindanawan, Butterfly House)

WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE: CATERING SERVICES LEVELED UP

A nice decent steak. That's all I ever wanted when I want to indulge. Sometimes, it takes a lot of effort just to get what you want. In this holiday season, traffic would be long and tiring. Parties would be set in different restaurants and the thought of all the cars on the road makes me want not to go out. Enter WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE. Recently, they have launched their catering services that would make your guests brave the traffic and head on over to wherever you may be.
On a lazy Saturday evening, I found myself in a subdivision in Quezon City. Mind you, it's only a few kilometers away from my place but the traffic was hellish. Once I entered and approached the house of one of my friends, I find this. A huge truck that seems different.
Inside, I saw the executive chef of WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE. Chef Chris was busy preparing all the cuts of meat that would be served that day. What made me more excited was that they have their very own broiler inside the truck. This would ensure that the meats are properly cooked the way WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE is known for. Aside from that machine, they also have a number of burners to be used for their other dishes.
While waiting for all the guests, I saw the set up. Everything was crisp and clean. It was as if I was transported to a WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE restaurant in Manila.  The wait staff was courteous and there was even a bar set up. The catering service thought of everything the party might need. From drinks, to utensils, and service, it was all there.
The meal started off with some baked bread. Dinner rolls, focaccia, and more.
Things started to heat up when they got the shrimp cocktails out. Huge, plump, and juicy, one piece, two piece won't be enough. BUT, one needs to pace for the meal ahead.
A steak dinner won't be complete without salad. Fresh greens to make up the ceasar salad, it was perfect precursor to a heavy meal.
It seems that they try to start the meal with some healthy dishes. The next one was the GRILLED SALMON. Perfectly cooked, tastes really good with the sauce.
For meat lovers, the CANADIAN BACON is a must. Thick cut, the bacon is just amazing. It's not your normal bacon but it has a deep flavor.
Before the main event, the wait staff offers glasses of wine. I chose to have red as it goes well with steak.
For the main course. The Steak.  WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE does excellent steak.
They serve them medium to medium rare. Honestly, I like it. It's a little red but juicy and it retains all the flavors. They have the USDA PRIME DRY-AGED STEAK. Flown in weekly and dry aged for an average of 28 days, the flavor of the beef are enhanced.
Something that guests must not miss would be the STEAK FRIED RICE. Only served in the Philippines, this is the mother of all steak fried rice. Made with drippings and cuts of succulent meat, the fried rice is a great partner to the meat. Don't forget to get a serving of their famous creamed spinach and mashed potatoes.
The meal will not be complete without dessert. Here, they offer their Chocolate Mousse and their New York Style Cheese cake. Both luscious, it's a must to try them.
WOLFGANG'S STEAKHOUSE in the Philippines is now offering their Catering Services. A minimum of 12 persons is required for the offer. The menu can actually be customized based on the needs of the party.
