CANADIAN BEEF in MAKATI SHANGRI-LA'S SAGE

CANADIAN BEEF has been a staple in restaurants here in the metro. If you're not familiar, Canadian Beef is a flexible and great source of flavors. Recently, Makati Shangri-la and the CANADIAN BEEF partnered together to create and serve delicious dishes at SAGE in Makati.
A small gathering of sorts was held in Sage Bespoke Grill in Makati Shangri-la a few days ago. Guests were treated to a multi-course selection of fine dishes made with Canadian Beef. The meal was themed after the different seasons in Canada. First stop was SPRING. Here, Le Bouilli de Grand Maman was served. This is Canadian Beef Consomme. There was subtle truffle flavor mixed with the consomme. It was light and perfect to start the dinner. Wine pairing was even done to elevate the flavors. Not a surprise, Canadian wines were used.
For Summer, Reef and Range on Three Summer Sisters was the name of the dish. It composed of a cofit of Canadian Spot Prawn and Beef Cheeks Tortellini. The prawns were sweet and magnificent. The tortellini brought out the beef flavor in a different way. It actually worked with the squash, cheese, and corn that came with it.
The next dish was for FALL. BEEF CHUCKS 2 WAYS. A very simple and straight forward approach to trying out what CANADIAN BEEF HAS TO OFFER.
First bite into the Braised beef gave me a great feeling. The flavoring was spot on. According to Chef Sebastian of Sage, the process was a long but worth it. Stock was used to reinforce everything. The grilled Canadian Beef Chuck had the perfect texture. It wasn't rubbery nor was it painful to eat. It was divine. Partnered with some mustard, this dish was by far the favorite of the night.
To further showcase the qualities of CANADIAN BEEF, they served WOOD GRILLED PRIME RIBEYE. Partnered with charred cabbage, honey glazed turnips and mustard jus, this piece of meat was simple and direct.
Winter was their dessert. This is their pumpkin spice with sticky toffee pudding. On the side, there was dark beer sorbet with dried fruits and nuts. Once they presented this to the table, you could smell how freshly baked it was. It reminds you of pine trees and the holiday season.
CANADIAN BEEF has again showed its character as a go to ingredient when it comes to the kitchen and grill. You could catch CANADA'S FOUR SEASON in SAGE BESPOKE GRILL up until March 28.

HEADING BACK TO WEE NAM KEE: Checking Out New and Old Dishes

One of the few places I know that serves Singaporean food would be WEE NAM KEE. This franchise from Singapore has been around for a few years in the metro. I haven't visited them in awhile and I wanted to see what new things they had to offer.
One lazy afternoon, I went on over to their Makati branch in Ayala triangle. If you're planning to watch the lights and sounds show at night, they also offer outside dining.
It was nice to see that they offer refreshing coolers. Drinks such as the Strawberry Passion Fruit, Fresh Barley, Milk tea, and even their in house iced tea provided a much needed break from the humid weather.
A visit to WEE NAM KEE will not be complete if you don't try their HIANANESE CHICKEN. You could actually pick between a combination of roasted and steamed. Both giving different texture and flavor profile, it is best to partner them with the sauces. You could go with the chili route, sweet soy sauce, and the ginger and garlic.
Something different would be their CURRY FISH FILLET. Not too spicy, this dish would make you want to eat a lot of rice. The curry went well with the fillet.
Speaking of rice, they offer a variety of such. You could go with their hiananese rice which was flavorful and fragrant. For fried rice lovers, they got this PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE WITH CHINESE CHORIZO. It's a sweet and tangy twist on fried rice. If that's not your bet, the SAMBAL FRIED RICE is a great alternative as well.
For other main choices, you could go with the ROAST PORK AND BARBECUE PORK  and GRILLED US FLAT IRON STEAK WITH SWEET SOY SAUCE.
The Roast Pork offered crunchy skin and moist meat. Kids would definitely enjoy it. The BBQ Pork had a sweet flavor to it. It makes you want to eat a lot of carbs. The US Flat Iron Steak is their take on something sizzling. The meat was tender and perfect for any meal.
WEE NAME KEE is the place to go for your HAINANESE CHICKEN RICE FIX. This Singaporean Restaurant has been in the metro for years. It's your comfort food at its finest.

WEE NAM KEE IS PRESENT AT DIFFERENT LOCATIONS in the Metro. I visited the one in Ayala Triangle. I wrote this article based on my opinions. I was invited to try out this dishes.

GAJA KOREAN KITCHEN IN POBLACION MAKATI

A good Korean restaurant doesn't have to be an eat-all-you-call buffet place that serves unlimited quantity of meat. Rather, it could be a place that is not smoky nor noisy. At GAJA KOREAN KITCHEN in POBLACION, MAKATI, the dishes are well thought off and cater to both Korean and Filipino palate.
Located on the second floor of a building along Kalayaan Avenue, this place caters to late night eaters and korean food cravers. One starts off with the traditional banchan. A set of appetizers are served which could be a mix of kimchi, deep fried small fish, egg, and fish cakes.

If salads are your thing, they have a couple that makes use of a mix of korean flavors. One is the Beef Bulgogi and another uses a sweet and spicy gochujang. One of my favorite is the DEEP SEA PAGEON. This Korean pancake is crispy and you'll find yourself just munching on it.
Rice meals are an integral part of the restaurant menu. They have lunch box sets from 11am-4pm or one could pick from a curry plate with deep fried pork cutlet, chicken, and even hamburger.
The crispy batter is perfect with the juicy meat of the chicken. The curry is mixed with a bit of kimchi flavor that spiced things up.
Extremely well cooked, the GALBI-JJIM or short rib is cooked for 48 hours. Sous vide, this is extremely tender and soft.
Partnered with a potato and carrot puree, this beef would be perfect with tons of rice.
The BULGOGI HAMBURG is a a joy to eat. It's like a complete burger meal. The meat is cooked to work well with the sauteed vegetables and mushrooms.
GAJA KOREAN KITCHEN is not your ordinary KOREAN BUFFET PLACE. It's a place to relax and eat dishes catered to the Korean and Filipino tongue.

CHECKING OUT THE GRID: More Reasons To Go Back

I found myself in Rockwell again. It seems I keep on visiting this busy Makati Mall more and more. With a new wing added, they now offer a ton of choices to visitors in terms of restaurants. One of them would be THE GRID. The best food market around, in my honest opinion. The geniuses behind Hole In The Wall concept, they made it into the greats of the great. This time around, I was able to check out stalls 1, 4, and 11.
Most of the purveyors in THE GRID are veterans in the food industry. Stall 1 or BUCKY'S, came out with their big guns and made me drool right off the bat. Their baked ziti was filling and cheesy.
The twister fries were better than McDonald's. No joke. But what was really delicious was their FRIED CHICKEN. They were crunchy and juicy at the same time. Each bite made me want to partner it with rice. I really had a great time chewing this baby.
Whenever I visit THE GRID, I always see a line at STALL 4. LE CHON by Chef Happy Ongpauco-Tiu, is everyone's favorite. Here, you can have your meals customize. You pick a main like their flavorful chicken, or their crunchy pork belly. Then, you partner it with different side dishes like fried potato, banana cue chips, and even an eggplant with baba ganoush.
The skin of their pork belly is just crunchy. You hear that sound with each bite. The meat is tasty and tender. They went well with the rice that they serve and the sauces they have.

Another must try stall would be BUN APPETIT. This started way back during Salcedo's Sunday Market. The couple behind this concept figured that there is no decent seafood roll in the metro. I got to agree with them. Years later, they are now part and parcel of the growing industry. In my honest opinion, I prefer their lobster rolls compared to another foreign Jedi-named restaurant. Even if it seems a bit expensive, they are definitely more affordable compared to those rolls in other countries. Trying to reinvent themselves, they now offer grilled cheese and even avocado toast. You can actually order whole lobsters from them with prior notice.
If you're asking me if I'm going to return, my answer would be a resounding yes. I actually been to THE GRID more than 5 times already. Yes, there's a lot to choose from. I can't wait for their expansion to open up.

THE GRID FOOD MARKET is located on the 2nd floor of the Power Plant Mall.

THE GRID FOOD MARKET. ROCKWELL'S FOOD HALL

The most common question that I get whenever I'm with someone would be "where will we eat?". It's the go to line for any foodie in the metro. Saan Masarap Kumain? It's just one of those things that could be easily answered yet it's difficult. You have to take note of the people you're with. Their personal preference and even your budget. Enter food halls. One of them in particular would be THE GRID FOOD MARKET. Located in Rockwell, Powerplant, this gorgeous food hall was well curated. Different stalls to cater to your wants and needs. They have everything for everyone. From booze to juice, from snacks to meals, from noodles to tapas, and even sweets to more sweets.
As you enter the GRID, on your left side, this wine selection would greet you. Aside from all sorts of bottled alcohol, they also have craft beer and even slices of premium ham. You may partner them with excellent cheese.

Aside from this, head on over to the middle of the GRID. This stall number 12 serves coffee and other cocktail concoctions. You got to check out their drink list.
Rambla's would be another sought after stall. A well established restaurant chain, this one serves it's best and brightest.
Aside from chorizo, they also have other pica-pica. Their pintxos and tapas like this croquetas is filled with oozy goodness.
This calamares' squid is cooked to perfection. The meat is not soggy nor too hard. The batter is perfect with the garlic aioli.
Another must visit would be Gochu-gang. They serve this amazing noodle dish. It's called FIRE NOODLES. You got to have a good sense of your taste bud. You could order based on your spicy preference. To be honest, I can't wait to try their other Korean dishes.
You should not miss the NASI LEMAK. You could actually choose between the deep fried crunchy chicken or the grilled salmon. The salmon is glazed with a tangy yet sweet sauce. Partnered all the stuffings of a traditional nasi lemak, you can't go wrong with this one.
For desserts, one of the stalls you could head on over to would be the WORKSHOP.
Aside from their 17 layered cakes, their brownies and small bites work well. Partnered with coffee, juices, or cocktails from EDSA, you will have a heck of a time here.

So rather than blame yourself if your friends and family don't like your choice of restaurant, you could head on over here. More choices for everyone.

RAFFLES HOTEL MAKATI STAYCATION: A Cut Above The Rest

A little bit of pampering could go a long way. After a solid work week, a much needed break is in order. I guess going on a staycation works for everyone. Sometimes, it's best to just relax and treat yourself to something a cut above the rest. At RAFFLES HOTEL in MAKATI, they think about the different things that you would need and would make everything work for you.
Aside from the glamorous hotel lobby, RAFFLES HOTEL shouts exclusivity and privacy. They have their own pool and a special walk way that could only be accessed by its guests. In addition to having everything at arm's length, patrons of RAFFLES HOTEL is definitely spoiled. Each suite has its own dedicated butler. Even if I wasn't able to really experience this service during my stay, I did liked their turn down service that replenished all the things that I used. From toiletries to soiled linens and even a little treat before going to bed. Everything was prepared in anticipation of my needs. Although, I didn't get it why they had a birthday cake for me even if it was months ago, I did appreciate the gesture.
In their lowest room category, you are greeted by an anteroom that has its own sofa and table with chairs. Here, there's even a tv and a coffee maker for your use. Entering the main room, the bed is prepared to your specifications. A short hallway that has a couple of cabinets, would lead to the huge bathroom.
The washroom is somewhat double a size of a normal one. There's a separate bathtub and a his and hers sink. The tub would be the perfect place to read a book or even just soak up all the sun from the outside.
Visited the Presidential Suite of Raffles Hotel.
Even if I didn't experience in-room check-in that some guests rave about, I was able to appreciate the small details. I realized how RAFFLES is different from all the rest.
